Project Background:
Malaria Consortium is bidding on a large multi-million-pound,
multi-country project focused on strengthening the surveillance, control and
treatment of visceral leishmaniasis (VL), a neglected tropical disease. Malaria
Consortium will lead a consortium of national and international partners to
implement this project in Ethiopia, South Sudan, Sudan and
Uganda.
 Job Summary: The Case Management / Clinical Specialist
will provide technical leadership in clinical case management of VL for this
multi-country, high profile, high value project, working closely with host
country governments and other partners.    
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Examine
    national protocols for diagnosis and treatment of VL for each targeted
    country with a goal of 
    participating at national and international level implementation
    discussions 
  • Be conversant
    with latest research and development in the area of  VL 
    diagnosis and treatment in order to be able to give technical
    advice and support in national and international forums.
  • Work with
    Malaria Consortium and partner staff in targeted countries to ensure
    quality implementation as well as forecasting, procurement and supply of
    VL drugs.
  • Work closely
    with Malaria Consortium and partner staff in targeted countries to review,
    revise and implement plans to promote early treatment seeking  behaviour and  use of best  diagnostic methods from screening activities
    to more complex diagnoses  and
    treatment of patients with multiple pathologies.
  • Train health
    staff using suitably adapted methods at community, primary health care and
    hospital level in correct diagnosis and treatment regimes appropriate for
    the particular levels of care.
  • Provide technical
    advice and support to the operations, behaviour change communications and
    external communications teams on issues pertaining to  VL diagnosis and treatment.  
  • Perform any other
    duties as required 
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
  • The applicant should
    possess Clinical experience working with in tropical medicine or neglected
    tropical diseases
  • Experience in working
    in Africa
  • Experience in working
    in multidisciplinary teams including with 
    local  partner  organisations and Ministries of Health
  • Experience in training
    health personal and adapting training techniques to fit audiences varying
    from community health workers to senior clinicians and government
    officials
  • Excellent writing,
    reporting and and presentation skills
  • Highly organized and
    able to work successfully in a team that is geographically
  • Dispersed
  • Specific experience
    with VL
  • Good understanding of
    public health principles
  • Understanding of aid
    effectiveness and utilisation of the principles in project design and implementation
  • Project management and
    planning skills
  • Ability to delegate
    efficiently and technically support teams with no direct line management
    responsibility over them
  • Strong negotiation
    skills and engaging Ministry of Health Officials
  • Experience working in
    Ethiopia, South Sudan, Sudan and/or Uganda
