About
Us:
Water For People is
implementing a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to develop
and test sustainable business models to expand sanitation coverage in Africa,
Asia, and Latin America. This grant aims to achieve sustainable excreta
management through catalyzing sanitation businesses and supporting the
development of approaches that can be taken to scale without the need for
external grant funding. The project currently develops and documents a series
of business landscaping and market analysis studies that enable replication in
other settings, and the testing of innovative sanitation technical solutions,
which overcome existing constraints and improve potential for commercially
viable private sector organizations. This grant aims to result in a pool of
businesses that have invested in the sanitation sector.
Job
Summary:
The job holder will
coordinate all Uganda Country Program Sanitation as a Business projects,
develop implementation plans, track progress, and provide business development
technical expertise to the programme.
Key
Duties and Responsibilities:
·        
Lead
innovation in the sanitation business space in line with the overall vision of
the Uganda and Water for People global sanitation program.
·        
Design
a program with the aim of achieving Sustainable Sanitation Level 3 with regard
to all the programs work.
·        
Develop
and implement a country strategy relating to the initiation, development and
growth of pit emptying and latrine building services in different segments of
the population.
·        
Coordinate
all Sanitation business activities in Uganda, maintaining regular contact with
all project staff, partner staff and relevant government bodies
·        
Manage
the technology development process in Uganda and ensure that sanitation
engineering process remains targeted and relevant to the sector and needs of
the sanitation businesses.
·        
Develop
project implementation plans, track progress against plans, and oversee
expenditures.
·        
Take
a perspective regarding lesson learned in the Uganda Country Program and other
country programs relating to SAAB. Implement changes to the Uganda program in
the light of the lessons learnt.
·        
Maintain
good relations with the Program Analyst (based in Bolivia) – Methodologies and
support their work in improving the overall approach of the process,
integrating their suggested improvements into the processes.
·        
Ensure
that a good learning relationship and effective communication channels are
developed between the Program Analyst (based in Bolivia)– Methodologies and
other Business Development Managers in Rwanda and Malawi.
·        
Provide
expertise in developing sanitation businesses in Uganda and develop systems
which improve the sector and entrepreneur capacity
·        
Identify
needs, opportunities, gaps, and constraints in potential sanitation markets,
models, and entrepreneurs, and provide mentoring and support to sanitation
businesses.
·        
Conduct
business landscaping studies, and oversee the management of market analysis
work.
·        
Engage
with local government to understand and if necessary improve the regulatory
operating environment for emerging sanitation businesses.
·        
Document
successes, failures and lessons learnt, and share knowledge internally and
externally.
·        
Actively
collaborate with Water For people strategic partners and other sector players
to promote sanitation as a business
·        
Establish
and facilitate multi-stakeholder learning platforms at National and District
level aimed at discussion sanitation as a business
·        
Build
trust and relationships with key local entrepreneurs, and gain an understanding
of the private sector in the country at all levels

Qualifications,
Skills and Experience:
·        
A
minimum of bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is preferred.
·        
Master’s
degree in business or relevant field is an added advantage.
·        
The
relevance of your actual educational qualifications to this programme should be
indicated in your application – noting how you have used your qualifications to
help develop successful businesses in particular locations.
·        
The
applicant should possess at least seven years directly related experience in
business development is preferred
·        
Experience
in provision of technical advice to small and medium enterprises in Uganda
·        
Experience
with running or investing in a business, particularly in the informal sector,
would be helpful but is not essential.
·        
Working
with Microfinance institutions

Personal
Competencies:
·        
Demonstrated
success in managing a team of innovators.
·        
An
understanding of how business works, what determines success or failure (both
within businesses themselves and within the operating environment) and how
entrepreneurs make decisions.
·        
Must
be flexible, have a nose for innovative entrepreneurial approaches, able to
work under tight deadlines and have excellent follow through skills. Be a
self-starter and work with limited supervision.
·        
Comfort
and confidence in communicating with entrepreneurs, and talent in communicating
with diverse and international constituents.
·        
Understanding
of what is required when using international grant funds, in terms of
effectiveness and accountability.
·        
Excellent
verbal/written communications and presentation skills.
·        
Excellent
analytical skills and the ability to extrapolate lessons to other situations.
·        
Sound
knowledge of the sanitation sector is preferable but not essential.
