Director of Learning and Research Job Vacancy at African Palliative Care Association (APCA) in Uganda

The African Palliative Care Association (APCA) is a young, dynamic and fast growing non-governmental organisation registered in Uganda with an Africa-wide mandate to promote and support access to affordable and culturally appropriate palliative care services for people with life-threatening illnesses, such as HIV/AIDS, cancer and other non- communicable diseases, and their families. APCA exists to ensure that palliative care is underpinned by evidence, widely understood and integrated into all health systems in order to reduce pain and suffering across Africa. APCA invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for the following positions based at the head office in Kampala, Uganda.
Job summary: The Director of Learning and Research under the direction of the Executive Director plays an essential role in ensuring that palliative care development in Africa is underpinned by strong evidence, which is coordinated and made available to inform programme and service development.
Main Areas of Responsibility
·         As a member of the Senior Management Team (SMT), to contribute towards the development and implementation of APCA’s strategic plan including, but not limited to: developing and coordinating the African Palliative Care Research Network (APCRN), participating in the strategic analysis and strategic planning processes that result in development of strategic and tactical plans, and mobilizing resources to support the implementation of the research agenda within APCA’s strategic plan.
·         To ensure that APCA is at the cutting edge of developments in the world-wide understanding of best practice in palliative care including, but not limited to: managing, reporting and disseminating research projects, conducting ‘learning reviews’ with APCA staff and documenting any lessons learned, and supporting the development of skills for palliative care research among palliative care practitioners in Africa.
·         To disseminate best practice in a way that will support continuous improvement in the delivery of palliative care in Africa including, but not limited to: liaising with the Executive Director and the SMT to develop integrated communication and advocacy strategies and plans, writing and publishing peer- and non-peer- reviewed research papers and developing the APCA staff team to do the same, and managing the quality control function of the organisation.
·         To support the development of palliative care tools and resources that will provide practical support to palliative care practitioners including, but not limited to: communicating with APCA staff and palliative care practitioners in partner organisations, and working with the communication and programmes team to produce advocacy and communication materials.
Qualifications, Skills & Experience
·         Masters degree in health-related subject with a significant research component essential.
·         PhD degree in a health-related discipline (added advantage and preferred).
·         At least 5 years experience in palliative care research or a closely related discipline.
·         Experience of working in Africa (preferred).
·         Extensive research experience and a proven track record of published papers.
