Job Summary: The Contract Driver will among other responsibilities assist in ensuring the success of Irish Aid Project by providing safe and secure transportation to IJM staff and Consultants on the Irish Aid project as they fulfil the project goals and objectives.

 

In addition, the Contract Driver will make sure that the vehicles are used responsibly and are well taken care of and ensuring that security measures are implemented to protect staff on field visits

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Provide transportation to IJM clients, staff and visitors for IJM business purposes within Karamoja region and surrounding districts, using an IJM vehicle;
  • Provide security for staff and counter surveillance while working in the field;
  • Conduct route survey.
  • Perform evasive and defensive driving in protective vehicle convoys;
  • Implement IJM’s standard Vehicle Policies & Procedures, with particular attention to compliance, safety, and security issues.
  • Follow the drafted schedule for the IJM vehicle, prioritizing among staff & Consultants requests for access to the vehicle.
  • Inspect and record vehicle conditions and use, and proper completion of vehicle log books;
  • Ensure accurate and timely routine maintenance and repair of IJM Vehicles;
  • Oversee maintenance of IJM vehicle, including regular mechanical maintenance (e.g. oil change), cleaning, refueling, etc. in conjunction with their supervisor;
  • Consult with outside mechanics in order to assess needs for major maintenance and/or repairs to IJM (Irish Aid) vehicle, including by obtaining price bids and supervising work performed by outside mechanics, as directed by their supervisor
  • Maintain first aid kit and be willing to perform first aid in cases of emergency;
  • Provide navigation and translation support for IJM staff.
  • Carry out errands as needed, such as paying bills, going to the Post Office and/or courier service offices, assisting with travel arrangements, etc.;
  • Perform other administrative duties as needed, such as photocopying, faxing, filing, etc.;




Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Completion of Lower Secondary-UCE Uganda Certificate of Education
  • At least five years of experience as a professional driver in and around Karamoja region especially Moroto and Amudat.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license;
  • Strong working knowledge of the geography of Karamoja region;
  • Good map-reading skills;
  • Understanding of maintenance requirements for four-wheeled-drive vehicles used in Ugandan environment. This includes familiarity with pricing for vehicle maintenance and repairs;
  • Fluency in English and Nga’ Karimojong
  • Completion of First Aid training;
  • Security training or experience;
  • Familiarity with prices customarily charged for vehicle maintenance and repair;
  • Certificate from a defensive driving course, and experience driving manual vehicles on rough terrain;
  • Mature Christian faith as defined by the Apostles’ Creed;
  • Strong initiative and ability to work independently;
  • Passionate commitment to IJM’s mission and values;
  • Works well under stress with a sustained positive attitude;
  • Exceptionally high level of honesty and integrity;
  • Highly dependable and reliable, including dangerous work scenarios;
  • Strong work ethic;
  • Willing to work long hours, nights, and weekends as needed;

  • This position requires frequent daytime travel, inside and outside of Karamoja region.
