About US:
The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is a private, independent,
humanitarian organization working on all aspects of the refugee cause in more
than 36 countries throughout the world. The aim of DRC is to protect refugees
and internally displaced persons (IDPs) against persecution and to promote
durable solutions to the problems of forced migration, on the basis of
humanitarian principles and human rights. DRC works in accordance with the UN
Conventions on Refugees and the Code of Conduct for the ICRC and NGOs in
Disaster Relief.
About ECHO Project:
The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is presently leading a Consortium of
four NGOs (DRC, LWF, Windle Trust Uganda and REACH) which has been selected to
implement a program in West Nile to provide lifesaving and sustainable WASH, livelihoods
and education services to South Sudanese refugees and surrounding host
communities. The Consortium is implementing a 1-year project funded under the
European Commission, European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations
– ECHO, to respond to refugee settlements and host communities in West Nile of
Uganda.
Job Summary: The Advocacy
and Communication Coordinator will lead the team in delivering vital
information and communication that enable excellent media and fundraising
activities for the Uganda Country Office and Consortium partners. The incumbent
will be responsible for implementing a comprehensive media, advocacy and
communications strategy, ensuring smooth flow of information, good relations
with high profile visitors and the media, and high-quality reporting to
showcase DRC Uganda’s activities and achievements. Additionally, the Advocacy,
Communications and Media Manager will work closely with the Regional Office in
Nairobi to ensure that external messaging and image are 
 
Key Duties and
Responsibilities:  
Media and Communications:
  • Implement communication activities
    including facilitating media visits and working within incoming media and
    communications surge support during emergencies
  • The incumbent will also ensure that the
    branding and communication guidelines of DRC are uniformly and
    consistently followed across the Uganda Country Office
  • Proactively develop a high profile for DRC
    Uganda through the production of high quality, well researched and well
    written products (in a variety of mediums) reflective of the dual mandate
    portfolio, responding quickly and appropriately to external requests for
    information, especially in emergencies. 
  • Formulate and deliver a clear and
    effective system for internal communications including the dissemination
    of newsletters and other documents and publications for stakeholders.
Advocacy:
  • Steer the development of an advocacy
    strategy for the Uganda Country Office and Consortiums led by DRC. 
  • Support programme leadership to articulate
    their top priority advocacy objectives in line with the CO Results
    Contract and regional advocacy and communication strategy. 
  • The jobholder will identify key
    opportunities and events for DRC Uganda to position itself as the leading
    organization for refugee and solutions programming issues in Uganda. 
  • Ensure that DRC receives national
    recognition for achieving proven and innovative national impact from
    well-managed solutions programmes and emergency response. 
  • Support country management and other
    programme staff in their work, including development of a plan for
    achieving their priority advocacy objectives in both an emergency and
    development context. This should include guidelines on the meaningful and
    safe participation of beneficiaries in advocacy and communications. 
  • Be an active member of the Advocacy
    platforms and appropriate forums. 
  • Initiating and supporting materials to
    achieve common advocacy goals
  • Work closely with the Regional Advocacy
    and Communications team in delivering materials, formulating policies,
    providing regular taking points, briefings and updates and helping to plan
    and support DRC representation at major national and international
    events 
Qualifications, Skills and
Experience:
  • The ideal candidate for the Danish Refugee
    Council (DRC) Advocacy and Communication Coordinator job placement should
    have at least five years of management experience in a media or an NGO
    environment, with experience in successfully leading the development and
    implementation of communication and campaign strategies for an
    international humanitarian organisation, preferably in the region
  • Previous experience working with national
    and international media, ideally in a similar strategic role
  • Significant exposure and experience in leading
    communication activities in refugee context
  • Experiencing building a media network and
    excellent digital and social media skills and understanding of how it can
    be used to further our work
  • Demonstrated ability to present complex
    information in a succinct and compelling manner.
  • Experience of building personal networks,
    resulting in securing significant new opportunities for the organization
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks,
    meet deadlines and work with limited supervision 
  • Proactive, stable and robust character and
    a good team player. 
  • Excellent communication skills, calm and a
    good sense of humor. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and
    demonstrated ability to establish effective working relations at all
    levels.     
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
    skills in English
  • The desired candidate must be able to
    conceptualize and articulate DRC vision and have the strong oral and
    written communication skill required to translate the vision into tangible
    action. The incumbent is expected to have extensive donor, government and
    partner engagement experiences. 
  • Previous experience and understanding of
    refugee and displacement issues is an advantage and ideally the candidate
    will have a good understanding of the region.
