Job Summary:  The Unix Systems Officer is responsible for installing, configuring, and optimizing the performance of computer hardware systems in Unix enterprise environments and/or Linux operating systems

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for performing software installations and performing upgrades to Unix and Linux operating systems with various software packages.
  • Responsible for day-to-day monitoring, troubleshooting and debugging issues that pop up in computer hardware networks, infrastructure, and operating systems.
  • Repair server hardware, perform audits, and ensure systems are working according to established policies and guidelines.
  • Actively monitor Unix/Linux systems and run diagnostic tests on hardware to identify problems and analyse system faults.
  • Analyse new technology and integrate that technology into existing systems Unix and Linux environments.
  • Conduct real-time troubleshooting – fixing hardware and software problems right as they occur.
  • As a Unix/Linux expert, occasionally draft support documents and update operations manuals, standard operating procedures
  • (SOPs), life-cycle documentation, and software deployment systems for Unix and Linux based systems.
  • Offer technical subject matter expertise and support to Customer facing e-Channels teams in in engagements with
  • Clients and resolving technical and service issues.
  • Support in the administration of windows server environment and integration.
  • Responsible for installation and management of open-source database management systems like Postgres, Mongodb, Mysql.
  • Responsible for patch management of both windows and Lunix environment to ensure all patches are up to date.
  • Responsible for administration of VMware and KVM environment and related server hardware infrastructure.
  • Responsible for management of disaster recovery plans including backup and restoration, replication, failover, redundancies to mention but a few.





Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Computer Science / Information Technology / Computer Engineering / Electrical and Electronic Engineering or its equivalent
  • Proficient with Linux and Unix technologies
  • ITIL Foundation Certificate in IT Service management
  • Certification in Linux administration or experience in deployment and running a corporate Linux environment.
  • Proof of training or certification in VMware and KVM is an added advantage.
  • Proof of training or certification windows server administration is an added advantage.
  • At least 4-5 years of working with Unix and Linux operating systems.
  • Proficient with Linux and Unix technologies
  • Skills in real time trouble shooting.
  • Skills in technical writing
