Job Summary:   The Senior Research Coordinator (Learning through Play) is responsible for coordinating and supervising War Child’s regional research portfolio under the PlayMatters consortium project, funded by the LEGO Foundation. Under the leadership of the Senior Researcher/Deputy Project Director for Research, the Senior Research Coordinator (SRC) is responsible for supervision and mentoring of country-level staff coordinating individual research projects in Uganda. The SRC ensures timely and coordinated implementation of a research portfolio that meets essential requirements of both scientific research and good humanitarian practice, as well as supporting research design and analysis, quality assurance, and providing technical inputs where relevant.

 

The Senior Research Coordinator also contributes to and engages with the East African research community through collaboration with East African research networks, organizations, academics, and institutes.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide technical and process support for War Child’s PlayMatters research program

  • With guidance from the Senior Researcher/Deputy Project Director for Research at, and in collaboration with the R&D team and research collaborators, implement the research agenda.
  • Ensure all research activities are implemented according to internationally accepted ethical and accountability to affected communities’ standards and in accordance with War Child and IRC codes of conduct and child safeguarding policies.
  • Provide oversight and quality assurance for data management standards and procedures to support War Child’s PlayMatters research.

Develop, supervise, and coordinate research processes

  • Oversee and coordinate development of appropriate, participatory, and ethical study designs for qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods research projects.
  • Coordinate planning and phasing of research projects.
  • Oversee planning and coordination of data collection between multiple research projects and sites, including RCTs, in consultation with consortium partners.
  • Responsible for work-planning on War Child PlayMatters research, at project and consortium level. And provide reports for WCH internally as well as for the consortium.
  • Undertake regular and sometimes longer travel to field locations where required to consult with colleagues and stakeholders, provide training and technical support, and oversee quality assurance and ensure accountability to affected communities.

Contribute to research capacity building and knowledge sharing

  • Ensure the Senior Researcher/Deputy Project Director for Research and R&D colleagues receive updates when needed to facilitate decision making processes and strategy
  • Supporting and supervising write-up and publication of peer-reviewed research reports, book chapters, conference presentations, and academic theses.
  • Participate in PlayMatters workstream and coordination meetings and fora where relevant
  • Build external implementing, technical, and academic partnerships and collaborations necessary for research within the East African region
  • Represent War Child at relevant research, learning, advocacy, and networking fora as requested by the Senior Researcher/Deputy Project Director for Research

People management

  • Ensure proper staffing across the research portfolio in order to achieve the determined objectives
  • Responsible for the execution of the established personnel policies and conducts for instance performance appraisals with direct reports if relevant
  • Identify development potential of employees, volunteers, and students, discusses this, establish agreements and support people in the implementation
  • Act as point of contact for employees with questions and problems





Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • MA degree in a relevant discipline (monitoring and evaluation , social science)
  • Minimum 4 years of relevant human subjects primary research experience (e.g. child-focused MHPSS, SEL, play-based programs, social sciences research with refugee populations)
  • Minimum 4 years of research/programme implementation experience in East Africa
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in supervision and mentoring of research staff and students
  • Significant experience with different study designs, in any case experience with randomised control trials is required
  • Familiarity with implementation research design and methodologies
  • Knowledge of and linkages with research networks, structures, and systems in East Africa
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge related to MHPSS or learning through play
  • Advanced familiarity with SPSS or STATA, Dedoose
  • Demonstrated understanding of factors affecting conflict-affected children and families in East Africa
