In 2011, Alight helped nearly 2.5 million people get essential services to regain their health and take back control of their lives. Alight works with its partners and constituencies to provide opportunities and expertise to communities of refugees and internally displaced persons in seven countries in Africa, Asia and Europe, including Iraq, Kosovo, and in the Darfur region of Sudan and is currently providing for emergency relief and recovery in Haiti. Alight provides shelter, clean water and sanitation, health care, skills training, microcredit education, protection to help survivors of war and natural disasters to rebuild their lives with dignity, health care, security and self-sufficiency.

 

Background of the project

Shelter Depot is a joint project between Alight and Every Shelter which is being implemented in Bidibidi Refugee Settlement with the intention to expand to other settlements within Uganda and beyond. Shelter Depot is a model that builds on the entrepreneurial and market-participatory behaviors of refugees to accomplish enhanced shelter, WASH, and livelihood goals in a manner that is nimble and responsive to the real-time needs of refugees. We believe that social and economic sustainability can be achieved through sound financial strategies and responsible business practices. Shelter Depot is committed to creating lasting change in the communities it is serving while maintaining a focus on overall sustainability and operational efficiency of the project.

 

Job Summary:   As the Shelter Depot Social Enterprise Lead you will be responsible for overseeing and optimizing the financial aspects of the various Shelter Depot stores to ensure the project meet its goals of operational efficiency. You will work closely with the leadership team to develop and implement strategies that align our mission with our financial performance. You will directly report to the Head of Programme.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Financial Analysis and Reporting:

  • Analyze sales reports, revenue reports, and inventory reports to identify trends, opportunities, and areas of project growth.
  • Prepare regular financial reports and presentations for the leadership team and relevant stakeholders to track progress towards sustainability goals.

Budgeting and Forecasting:

  • Oversee the Shelter Depot Storekeeper and store teams to develop budgets and financial forecasts that align with the project’s social and financial objectives.
  • Monitor and update budgets as needed, ensuring accurate tracking of revenues and expenses.

 

Cost Management:

  • Identify cost-saving opportunities and efficiency improvements to optimize operational expenses while maintaining quality social impact.
  • Conduct cost-benefit analyses for proposed initiatives and project investments.

Revenue Generation:

  • Work with the Shelter Depot teams, procurement team, and the leadership team to develop strategies for increasing revenue and sales, both through traditional channels and innovative approaches.
  • Monitor sales performance and recommend adjustments as needed to achieve revenue targets.

Strategic Planning:

  • Participate in the development of long-term strategic plans for Shelter Depot that balance social impact with financial sustainability.
  • Develop and track key performance indicators (KPIs) related to financial sustainability.
  • Provide financial insights to support decision-making and strategy formulation.

Dashboard Maintenance:

  • Maintain the Shelter Depot dashboard, ensuring data accuracy and accessibility for key stakeholders.
  • Implement improvements to the dashboard as needed to enhance data visualization and reporting capabilities.





Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in financial analysis, and budgeting
  • Proven experience in social enterprise
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of sustainability principles and their integration into financial strategies.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and influence cross-functional teams.
  • Proficiency in Quickbooks.
  • Proficiency in Power BI and other financial software and tools

 

Preferred:

  • Experience in the nonprofit sector
  • Advanced qualifications in MBA
