Job Summary:  Our client, a Micro Finance Institution is seeking to hire a Head of Internal Audit based at our head office in Kampala. The role is responsible for the development and execution of the annual audit plan, including leading a team of auditors and Fraud & misappropriation Officers in the performance of financial, operational, and compliance audits. This role will report to the Board through the Audit Committee with a dotted reporting line into the CEO. As the Head of Internal Audit, you will be expected to develop and maintain good working relationships with management and the Board of Directors.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop annually a risk-based internal audit plan for review and approval.
  • Oversee the implementation of the approved plan, ensure proper resourcing for implementation of the plan and adjust the plan as needed in response to changes in our client’s business risks, operations, systems and controls.
  • Support across countries as the organization grows, providing advice and guidance to in country teams to ensure our client has a consistent approach to internal audit across the organization.
  • Keep senior management and the Board apprised of any changes needed to the internal audit plan.
  • Ensure methodical documentation of work plans and recommendations and all required follow up on findings and corrective actions.
  • Design and Implement an Audit System and Dashboard.
  • Provide technical assistance with investigations, special audits, and provide subject-matter expertise as needed.
  • Remain current on audit and regulatory trends and incorporate any required updates or activities into the annual audit plan.
  • Perform organization-wide risk assessments to identify significant risks or exposure related to internal controls or compliance, laws and regulations, providing feedback and recommendations on business risks and improving operational processes where appropriate.
  • Direct the work of external auditors on select audits, as directed by the Board and senior management, to ensure the audit work remains effective and within timelines.
  • Recommend organization-wide training based on gaps identified.
  • Establish and assign departmental goals to team members and evaluate their performance.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop career paths for direct reports and creating innovative solutions to challenges in the field.
  • As a Head of Internal Audit you will need to create a motivational working environment for a team that spends the majority of time in the field and different locations.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The applicant must hold a Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • CPA, CIA, CISA or equivalent required.
  • Five years of related work experience with at least 2 years in a leadership level role.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the finance, banking or microfinance industry is desirable.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with Board level stakeholders and Senior Management.
  • A great team player with a hands on management style.
