Alliance Forum for Development-AFOD Uganda is a non-profit, non-governmental organization working with humanitarian and development partners to address the needs of conflict affected population, rural and urban poor communities in Uganda to address their real needs in areas of health, nutrition, food security and livelihoods, environmental health, protection and
psychosocial support, and research.

 

Job Summary:  The incumbent will support target beneficiaries Small Holder Farmer (SHF) under the AFOD Livelihood intervention in Adjumani settlement to improve the household food security through increased production, promotion of climate-smart environmentally-friendly livelihood practices, and technology, and low-input ecologically-friendly farming practices plus the generation of additional income. The function also requires the provision of practical training and assistance on good farming practices, empowering vulnerable groups including youth/young adults, women/women heads of households, and linking Small Holder Farmers (SHF) to financial literacy providers and support SHF groups village savings and loans scheme.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Project Implementation

  • Work with the SHF groups to implement good agronomical practices to increase production, and encourage farmers to adopt new, improved methods of farming.
  • Coordinate and co-facilitate training activities on good agronomic practices including climate-smart agriculture and post-harvest handling.
  • Organize study groups for farmers, ‘farmer days’, demonstrations, lectures, and literature.
  • Assist in coordinating the groups and linking them to financial literacy trainings.
  • Assist to develop agricultural input requirements for the SHF groups and coordinate procurement, delivery, and distribution of items.
  • Conduct project follow-up and provide support and guidance to community groups and individual households to ensure project compliance and continuation.
  • Assist in identifying potential risks and issues and provide mitigation measures and recommendations for improvement.
  • Facilitate partnerships that increase access and adoption of technologies to improve the agricultural productivity of farmers.
  • Assist in conducting regular meetings with leadership and community members on performance, participation, and perceptions of the projects.
  • Liaise with Partners and authorities on livelihood related issues under the technical guidance of the supervisor.
  • Identify and leverage partnerships that enable targeted farmers to access timely and appropriate market information.

Reporting and Administration

  • Assist in the development and manage work plans.
  • Complete field reporting on a weekly basis and provide support with information sharing for donor reporting and proposal writing as might be required.
  • Take photographs and assist in the development of the human-interest story.

Monitoring and Evaluation:

  • Provide suggestions to management on potential activities that need to be redone, reviewed, or introduced to ensure sustainability of AFOD Livelihood projects, methodologies, and improvement in the lives of community members.
  • Provide feedback and recommendations to the Program Manager and the program team to improve AFOD Livelihood way of work.
  • Generate donor reports at a field level and ensure the accuracy and validity of information Provided.
  • Perform any other duties assigned.





Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The ideal applicant must hold at least a Diploma in Agriculture, a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture is an added advantage.
  • Work Experience of not less than 3 years with a reputable organization working in a humanitarian development context.
  • Strong training &facilitation skills.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written English.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs i.e., Word and Excel.
  • Understanding of Community Based Development Principles.
  • Organizes work effectively while remaining aware of changing priorities and deadlines.
  • Able to work independently to accomplish tasks, but also as part of a team to achieve mutual goals and objectives.
  • Able to think outside of the box to provide plausible solutions to issues and challenges.
  • Strong work ethic, flexibility, and ability to build relationships with various stakeholders most notably colleagues, and community members.
  • Able to keep a positive attitude in a fast-paced and challenging environment.
  • Ability to ride a motorbike would be a strong advantage.
