About US:

SPOUTS is a social venture that locally manufactures and distributes effective ceramic water filters to improve the access to clean drinking water sustainably in Uganda. In addition, we locally manufacture free hand-washing stations to improve access to hygiene.  Our mission is to provide clean drinking water and hygiene services to all East Africans.

We currently sell multiple water filter products under the brand name “Purifaaya”.  The Purifaaya provides financial, social, and health benefits for its customers in addition to environmental benefits.

Since SPOUTS sold its first Purifaaya in 2015, it has distributed 60,000+ filters to East Africa providing over 350,000 end-users with long-term access to clean drinking water.  SPOUTS is a rapidly-growing organization with over 120 employees and the next step is to scale its operations across all of East Africa to provide all with clean drinking water.

 

Job Summary:  Responsible for strategic leadership of the Sales and Marketing Division. The Head, Sales and Marketing has specific responsibility for planning and coordinating sales, marketing, customer service and product development initiatives and strategies targeted towards expanding existing and new markets and ensuring high levels of customer satisfaction.

The Head, Sales and Marketing will report directly to the CEO and will work closely with all department heads.

Some travels will be required between the SPOUTS head office, the factory at Nakawuka and other parts of Uganda, East Africa in response to the demands of the Sales and Marketing responsibilities.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:  

Provide strategic leadership and coordination of all aspects of the Sales and Marketing Division to contribute to profitability and the long-term sustainability of SPOUTS as a social enterprise.

  • Contribute as a member of management to SPOUTS’ strategic planning and decision making.
  • Prepare comprehensive plans to show the priorities of Sales and Marketing within the broader SPOUTS’ strategic planning processes.
  • Ensure the CEO is kept appraised of developments and business results in relation to the responsibilities of the Sales and Marketing Division.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with industry influencers and key strategic partners to improve business outcomes.
  • Monitor emerging issues based on changing political, social and legislative trends and propose innovative responses to facilitate SPOUTS’ capacity to capitalise on potential future markets.

Lead the positioning of the company’s sales and marketing activities in order to capitalise on business opportunities, achieve positive and sustainable business results and ensure customer satisfaction.

  • Provide leadership in the development and implementation of strategic marketing and sales plans and forecasts to achieve company objectives for products and services.
  • Plan and oversee advertising and promotion activities to ensure that marketing objectives fall within designated budgets and deliver growth in sales.
  • Ensure coordination of all sales activities in order to deliver timely, customer-focussed outcomes of high quality.
  • Establish and maintain a consistent image consistent with Spouts as a social enterprise, throughout all product lines, promotional material and events.
  • Prepare accurate reports in line with the SPOUTS’ reporting schedules and requirements.
  • Maintain transparent and accountable management of financial affairs to ensure that strategies are consistent with good business practice and comply with business record keeping requirements.
  • Work with the CEO and Finance Director to identify the monetary resources needed to achieve strategic and operational objectives.
  • Coordinate strategies to assess customer satisfaction and product impact and ensure the collection of credible information for use in stakeholder relations and marketing.

With a particular focus on sales and marketing division, manage company resources and exercise responsibility in order to benefit the company as a whole.

  • Lead and ensure the development of staff to ensure a skilled and effective workforce with capacity to implement and deliver SPOUTS’ goals and priorities.
  • Ensure that SPOUTS has sufficient resources for sales and marketing staff to complete their responsibilities to the highest standard within current constraints.
  • Appropriately and effectively delegate responsibility.
  • Monitor operations, systems and processes and undertake interventions as required to maintain and enhance business outcomes.
  • Undertake management of employees where there is a direct reporting relationship and ensure there is a mechanism in place to monitor individual performance, assess progress and provide feedback to support individual development.

Provide strategic leadership in delivering excellent customer service

  • Provide leadership in the development and implementation of strategic customer service operations to achieve company objectives for products and services.
  • Drafts, implements, and executes policies and procedures to facilitate a quality customer service experience.
  • Establishes performance metrics for customer service representatives.
  • Establishes service levels and requirements for the department.
  • Develops and implements methods to record, assess, and analyse customer feedback.
  • Develops and implements training and quality assurance programs for new hires and experienced employees.
  • Identifies and recommends or acquires updates and expansions to technology, equipment, and policies that may improve customer service and retention.

Training

  • Grow, train, mentor and coach a high performing sales and marketing team which adheres to SPOUTS’ values, standards and puts customers first.
  • Build a dynamic training function that speaks to the immediate needs of agents, clients and staff.
  • Continually seek information on how to best equip the sales and marketing teams with product knowledge and market dynamics.
  • Compile and put together commission structures for Sales team in line with the current market trends.

Demonstrate corporate responsibility

  • Comply with the SPOUTS’ standards of conduct and all applicable policies and legislation.
  • Represent SPOUTS in public and official forums, functions and joint ventures as required.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The ideal applicant must hold a Bachelor’s degree in any Business and Management related field. A Masters’ degree in these areas is advantageous.
  • Extensive experience in program management relevant to sales, marketing and customer service programs and understanding of business principles, particularly in a multicultural setting.
  • A qualification relevant to the work of Director, Sales and Marketing will be highly regarded.
  • In depth understanding of Market Research methods and analysis.
  • At least 7 years in Business/senior manager or director, preferably within high-growth D2C (direct-to-consumer) sales and service companies or sectors.
  • Proven track record of outstanding performance in a previous complex enterprise.
  • Proven track record of managing complex budgets successfully.
  • Solid Knowledge of performance reporting, sales and marketing/budgeting process.
  • Leading as a great influencer with high Emotional Intelligence.
  • Ability to make business and sales projections three years into the future.
  • Excellent written and oral English language abilities are required
  • Proficiency in other East African languages is desired but not strictly necessary
  • Proficient in MS-Office Suite (especially Excel)
  • Proficient in QuickBooks
  • Proficiency in Salesforce, CRM tools and other business analysis programs
  • Good understanding of information systems that relate to Sales and Marketing.
