The Makerere University Walter
Reed Project (MUWRP) is a non-profit HIV research program that was established
in 2002 as a result of a memorandum of understanding between Makerere
University and The Henry M. Jackson foundation for Advancement of Military
Medicine Inc. of USA (HJF). The primary purpose of MUWRP is to develop,
evaluate and provide interventions to mitigate disease threats of public health
importance to Uganda.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • The
    Biomedical Engineer will perform installation, preventive maintenance and
    repair work on electrical and an extensive range of large and small
    electromechanical equipment at various MUWRP held Facilities
  • Oversee
    back-up power (i.e. generators, invertors, UPS) connections and preventive
    maintenance to assure functionality.
  • Oversee
    Liquid Nitrogen plants and ensure adequate maintenance and condition of
    plants
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Receives
    assignments in the form of oral instruction, work orders or other
    instruction from the Supervisor concerning the work to be done.  Proceeds to accomplish the necessary
    maintenance, repair, or installation of equipment in accordance with
    established electrical trade practices
  • Personally
    perform and execute highly skilled level of work
  • Perform
    duties involving the installation, renovation, preventive maintenance,
    repair and rebuild of laboratory 
    equipment, machines, components and control devices associated to
    the electrical systems, lighting system, electrical controls and
    components of electrical equipment and machinery, and electrical parts and
    devices of electrically operated appliances.
  • Clean,
    service and repair electrical controls and components of electrical
    equipment and machinery.
  • Participate
    in major troubleshooting, installation and renovation of facilities,
    utilities and equipment.
  • Provide
    work and services high in quality, efficiency and reliability.
  • Monitor
    and keep log of all operating laboratory equipment. Respond to temperature
    outages as necessary.
  • Perform
    emergency repair and service when needed.
  • Maintain
    and keep assigned tools and equipment in good order.  Personally perform tool inventory to
    make sure all assigned tools and equipment are accounted for at all times.
Logistics Support 
  • Ensure
    preventive maintenance and unscheduled work orders are completed
    correctly, especially labor hours, and submitted promptly to the
    laboratory Supervisor.
  • Prepare
    requisition for common and special tools, equipment, spare parts, bench
    stock, and other materials needed for immediate or future needs to the
    Supervisor.
  • Identify
    electromechanical equipment needing maintenance documentation such as
    owner’s manuals from the manufacturer.
  • Must
    be prepared to work and be available on nights and weekends. May be called
    to respond to emergency and unforeseen work.
  • Assist
    others in their primary duties and perform other duties as assigned.
  • Observe
    safety practices at all times.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
  • The
    ideal candidate should preferably hold a BSC in Biomedical engineering
    from a recognized university
  • One
    year of related experience
  • As
    a fully qualified biomedical engineer with experience in refrigeration and
    air conditioning
  • Ability
    to read and write English is required.
  • Must
    have a thorough knowledge of locally accepted practices and procedures of
    trade(s) involved. 
  • Familiarity
    with internationally accepted trade practices and procedures is desirable
  • Ability
    to operate various hand tools, and instruments is required.
