The Swiss Foundation for Technical Cooperation (Swisscontact) is an international non-profit organization engaged in development cooperation. Swisscontact was contracted by German International Corporation (GIZ) to implement the ‘Access to Rural and Agricultural Finance in Northern Uganda’ Project in the regions of lango, Acholi and West Nile.
Job Summary: The Agriculture Specialist shall shepherd product development in partnership with financial institutions, NGOs, consultants and other private sector partners and facilitate product rollout as well as ongoing revisions at all levels, in coordination with the project team and in line with the sector Strategy focusing along agricultural value chains.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Conduct Gross Margin Analysis (GMA) for selected commercial crops
  • Prepare cost benefit analysis estimates for investment in single axle tractor, hammer mills, small-scale oil press and filtering plant, maize Sheller, similar small scale (mostly post-harvest) equipment.
  • Prepare benefit/cost estimates for investment in poultry enterprises
  • Scale up and manage partnerships with financial institutions and key private sector actors proactively building relationships with partners and integrating financial services.
  • Develop Warehouse Management Receipt System
  • Bulking & Marketing in Savings Groups
  • Facilitate linkages of farmers to sources of information and advice.
  • Support other products design by identifying constraints and providing recommendations.
  • Introduce the program to relevant stakeholders and foster ongoing positive cooperation with these stakeholders.
 Qualifications, Skills & Experience:
  • A degree, preferably in Agricultural Science, Agri-Business Development, Agricultural Economics from a recognized institution.
  • 5 years of experience in rural institutional building, agricultural marketing, warehouse management, entrepreneurship skills or experience in working with cooperatives will be desirable.
  • Considerable experience in developing financial products.
  • Ability to communicate in the local languages; Langi and/or Acholi is a must.
