About SHU:
Save for Health Uganda (SHU) is a reputable local NGO founded in 2002
with a mission to improve the quality of health of Ugandans through
self-managed community health financing approaches. SHU has secured a new grant
to implement a 3-year project (Oct 2014 – Sept 2017). The project aims at
reducing barriers to access and utilization of quality health care services.
The project’s goal is to contribute to the realization of Universal Health
Coverage (UHC) in Uganda. Specifically, the project will: (a) promote and
support Community Health Financing Schemes in the Districts of Luwero,
Nakasongola, Nakaseke, Masaka and Bushenyi to grow and function well; and (b)
advocate for improved access to quality health care services for all Ugandans.
Job Summary: The
Communication and Advocacy Officer will steer SHU’s advocacy and communications
initiatives in line with the organization’s strategic and project objectives.
Key Duties and
Responsibilities: 
  • Spearhead the development and review of
    all SHU advocacy strategy and in putting it into practice.
  • Work with stakeholders and sector partners
    to develop and implement sustainable advocacy initiatives.
  • Significantly contribute to high-level
    sector advocacy initiatives and stimulate the participation of SHU
    partners and networks in those initiatives.
  • Collaboratively assess and support the
    development of messages and communications products related to the
    organization’s strategic priorities and programs
  • Steer the development, documentation and
    sharing of key advocacy issues and communications products, such as
    magazines, booklets, newsletters, flyers, audiovisual materials, speeches
    and in liaison with the Monitoring and Evaluation Officer update the
    website and all electronic
  • Take part in developing projects and in
    fundraising for developed projects.
  • Actively participate in relevant networks
    at national and District level, and represent the organization in advocacy
    forums.
  • Prepare quarterly, semester, and annual
    reports of advocacy activities
  • Train and build the capacity of SHU team
    members and community health prepayment schemes
  • Network with staff to actively participate
    in implementing project advocacy initiatives.
  • Work in liaison with other department
    heads to integrate advocacy work into SHU management and programming for
    effective and efficient achievement of organization goals.
Qualifications, Skills and
Experience: 
  • The applicant should preferably hold a
    Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication/Public Relations
  • Additional training in use of ICT or
    related fields
  • Qualification in Health communications, public
    health, languages education or related field is an added advantage
  • A minimum of four or more years of
    relevant professional experience, working in communications and advocacy,
    media, at a national and/or international level preferably in the health NGO
    sector.
  • Excellent track record in organization
    communication and advocacy.
  • Highly proactive, self-starter, creative
    and able to work independently in fast-paced environment
  • Possess the ability to work effectively
    with a broad range of local and national partners, and in a team
    environment
  • Ability to use digital and social media
    tools
  • Excellent written and oral communications
    in English is essential with strong ability to edit and synthesize complex
    documents into short easy to read text.
  • Possess the ability to interview and
    interact with high profile personalities
  • Ability to produce advocacy and
    communication strategies, reports, publications, brochures, policy briefs,
    and press releases with a track record of published written work, message
    creation and/or multi- media pieces.
