Job Summary:  The Job holder will lead the
conservation agenda at Country level and ensure the development and
implementation of the WWF Uganda Conservation Strategy to the highest standards
in line with the Global Programme Frameworks (GPF), East and Southern African
Regional Programme (ESARP) and African Rift Lakes (ARL) Strategies.
Key Job Roles:
  • Ensures that the WWF
    Uganda Conservation Strategy is developed and evolves in line with Uganda
    conservation priorities and requirements;
  • Ensures that the WWF
    Uganda Conservation Strategy is implemented through effective
    program/project implementation and development;
  • Provides advice and
    direction as appropriate to WWF program coordinators and teams;
  • Promotes the vision
    and objectives of the WWF Uganda Conservation Strategy to external and
    internal stakeholders. Participates in strategic partnership-building and
    developing fundraising approaches;
  • Establishes and
    implements effective program organizational / management structures,
    policies, and processes; and
  • Ensures that WWF
    Uganda technical standards and reporting requirements are met.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Ensures that a
    Conservation Strategy relevant to national policies, constituencies, and
    civil society, is developed, implemented and aligned with the Global
    Programme Framework; the Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Conservation
    Plan, including the Africa Rift Lakes strategies
  • He/she is the team
    leader of all program and technical personnel such that, in line with the
    Conservation Strategy, program/projects are incorporated into a coherent
    conservation program;
  • Is responsible for all
    aspects of program/project management, through program coordinators and
    project managers and their team, by the appropriate application of support
    and advice;
  • In line with the
    Conservation Strategy, develops annual workplans with clear priorities for
    members of program teams, and supervises their efficient implementation;
  • Develops and maintains
    a monitoring and reporting system for projects that ensures the very best
    practice in program management and that provides timely reports according
    to the formats and schedules of partners and Network;
  • Ensures appropriate
    and regular, technical and other meetings for project staff;
  • Ensures strategic
    engagement with relevant international and national stakeholders on
    conservation and technical issues, including strong engagement on policy
    issues;
  • Promotes the vision
    and objectives of the WWF Uganda Conservation Strategy to government,
    donor, civil society, corporate, and WWF stakeholders at national and
    International-level meetings, conferences, and fora;
  • Works closely with the
    Regional Conservation Director and the Heads of other Departments in order
    to ensure the smooth functioning of all aspects of the Country Program;
  • Participates in
    strategic partnership-building / fundraising approaches with Government,
    Donor, Civil Society, Corporate, and WWF stakeholders;
  • Develops and maintains
    a technical communications network for the support of projects and
    partnerships;
  • Ensures compliance to
    standards, both internal and external, for all projects and conservation
    activities;
  • Is responsible, in line
    with the Conservation Strategy and in consultation with programme staff
    and all relevant contacts, for the development and submission of program
    concepts and proposals, and for continuity of program implementation, to
    ensure best practice in conservation and the growth of the conservation
    program;
  • Participates in Senior
    Management Team meetings and other activities, in support of the Country
    Director and other Heads of Department;
  • Identifies and designs
    projects in accordance with the identified program priorities;
  • Develops and manages
    the conservation budget;
  • Trains, coaches and
    mentors direct reports;
  • Performs other duties
    as requested by the Country Director and, in his/her absence, acts as
    Deputy.
Qualifications, Skills &
Experience:
  • The candidate should
    hold an advanced university degree preferably Masters and/or PhD in a
    relevant field (Conservation / Environment / Natural Resource Management,
    Marine / Forest / Freshwater / Terrestrial Ecology.
  • Additional academic
    training or a degree in Business, management and Economics would be a
    strong asset;
  • Proven track record in
    successfully developing, leading, and managing projects and programs in
    the field of Conservation, Natural Resource Management, International
    Development, and/or other related fields;
  • At least seven (7)
    years experience in a Program/Project Management role, 3 years of which
    should be in the Eastern/Southern Africa region (preferably Uganda), with
    demonstrated success in managing multi-disciplinary teams; and
  • Knowledge of the
    International Development and Conservation community in Eastern and
    Southern Africa, as well as of relevant policy issues.
  • Proven leadership and
    team management skills;
  • Skilled in
    negotiation, liaison, and in relationship and conflict management;
  • Strong skills in
    project planning, proposal writing, financing, management, implementation,
    and evaluation, and experience working with donors;
  • Strong organisational
    and analytical skills;
  • Strong vocational
    interest in nature conservation;
  • A working knowledge of
    financial management, especially of programs/projects;
  • Excellent
    inter-personal skills, with the ability to network and to develop and
    maintain strong relationships at all levels, both internally and with
    local communities, government agencies, the not-for-profit sector, the
    scientific community, the business community, and the WWF Network;
  • Adaptable, flexible,
    able to take initiative and prioritize among competing demands;
  • Excellent oral and
    written communications skills in English; and
  • Adherence to WWF’s
    values, which are: passionate & optimistic, challenging &
    inspiring, credible & accountable, persevering & delivering
    Results.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
The Conservation Manager is ultimately responsible for the supervision
and management of all WWF Uganda Programs and technical staff. Direct
day-to-day supervision will be exercised over the members of the Program teams
and other technical staff. The Conservation Manager will involve
himself/herself as appropriate in the hiring, development and evaluation of all
WWF Uganda Program and technical staff.
