Title: Technicians- Animal Health (2 Vacancies)
The National Livestock Resources Research Institute (NaLIRRI) with the main institute located at Tororo and with some activities at Serere and Namulonge, is one of the Public Agricultural Research Institutes(PARIs) mandated by the 2005 Act of Parliament to undertake, promote, coordinate and ensure dissemination and application of research results in livestock and apiculture. NaLIRRI invites applications from competent Ugandans to fill the Position above;
Duties and Responsibilities:
·         Preparing and maintaining laboratory materials, equipment, reagents, chemicals, utilities and ensure facilities for work are in clean conditions Setting up, adjusting, calibrating, cleaning, maintaining and troubleshooting laboratory and field equipment.
·         Collecting and preparing laboratory and field samples and specimens of disease vectors and nuisance arthropods for processing and analysis.
·         Extracting of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA), implication them using PCR techniques and analysis using electrophoresis techniques.
·         Measuring or weighting compounds and solutions for use in testing as well as preserving, isolating and analyzing samples and specimens as directed.
·         Conducting standardized Entomological procedures, tests analyses to diagnose disease and quantify vectored disease risk.
·         Trapping, collecting, identifying disease vectors and carrying out pesticide resistance and sensitivity assays.
·         Examining specimens to detect the presence of disease or other problems through microscopic examinations, serological identification, isolation and purification of samples.
·         Maintain laboratory animals and insects such as a monkey hamsters’ rats, mice as well as insects etc, used for the isolation of micro-organisms.
·         Monitoring and observing experiments, recording production and test data for evaluation as well as a interpreting and implementing quality assurance standards
·         Providing input in the development of the annual budget, especially items specifications and cost.
·         Providing input in the design and construction of facilities for undertaking experiments
·         Undertaking routine maintenance of laboratory equipment and facilities including installation and calibration.
·         Requisition fro laboratory materials and equipment according to approved budget.
·         Observing laboratory security and safety procedures following proper protocols in order to ensure effective storage, handling, and disposal of samples and specimens in accordance with safety regulations, preparation of museum specimens,
·         Analysing experimental data, interpret results and writing and summaries of findings.

Qualifications, Skills & Experience
·         Diploma in medical Parasitology or Medical Entomology or Medical Laboratory Technology with demonstrated skills in handling parasites and or vector.
·         Two (2) years relevant working experience gained from a large organisation.
·         Bachelor of Biomedical Laboratory Technology, Bachelor of Science Technology (Biology) or Bachelor of Science (Zoology with applied Entomology Option) is an added advantage.
