million dollars in funded projects. The State University of New York’s Center for International Development
(SUNY) seeks superior candidates to serve in several positions for an upcoming
Uganda Rights and Rule of Law program funded by the U.S. Agency for
International Development (USAID). The project is designed to support a
number of critical national-level institutions and civil society organizations
in safeguarding the rule of law and human rights in the country through work to
strengthen the judiciary, access to justice and advocacy activities, and the
free flow of information. The project will also work closely with a wide range
of civil society organizations to strengthen their capacity to carry out
effective initiatives in the above areas.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- The Advocacy Specialist will be
responsible for provision and oversight of technical assistance related to
program activities supporting Component 2 of the Project and some of
Component 3. - The Component 2 work will entail a focus
on civil society engagement/outreach work aimed at advancing targeted
legal reform and human rights-oriented initiatives, especially those
concerned with expanding access to justice for ordinary Ugandan citizens;
monitoring human rights and access to justice problems; increasing citizen
awareness of their civil rights; mobilizing support for certain law reform
efforts; designing and implementing relevant information campaigns; and
creating support for certain strategic litigations efforts, particularly
those aimed at redressing problems faced by disadvantaged or vulnerable
population groups. - The Component 3 work will entail similar
efforts aimed at drawing attention to the importance of free media in
Uganda and monitoring and safeguarding media freedom in the country.
Qualifications, Skills and
Experience:
Experience:
- The Advocacy Specialist should hold a
bachelor’s degree. A degree in law, political science, social
policy, or a related social science discipline is desirable. - At least three years experience in civil
society advocacy/engagement work, including a focus on the
capacity-building of CSO’s in a variety of dimensions, including advocacy
skills and methods, organizational management, outreach and
communications, strategic planning, and financial management. - Two years’ experience involving engagement
with various key stakeholders relevant to this program, including
representatives from the judiciary, CSO community, and other formal or
informal adjudication institutions in Uganda or other developing
countries. - Experience in civic
participation/advocacy/engagement work in Uganda. - Possession of cultural awareness and
sensitivity - Proven sound work ethics.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively
as part of a team - Ability to initiate and implement
activities with minimal oversight and supervision, assess priorities, and
competently complete a variety of activities with a high level of accuracy
and timeliness.
