About US:

The Medical Research Council (MRC UK) is an internationally recognised centre of excellence with dominant research themes in the areas of HIV and emerging infections, vaccines and immunity, and chronic diseases and cancer. Through a multidisciplinary approach, intersecting basic science, epidemiological research, social-behavioural research and the conduct of new intervention evaluation studies, the Unit contributes knowledge on changing epidemics and diseases, the evaluation of innovative health care options, treatment and prevention and the development of health policy and practice in Africa and worldwide. Following the signing of strategic transfer agreements between the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the Medical Research Council (MRC UK), the Unit formally joined LSHTM on 1st February 2018. The exciting new partnership will boost research capacity into current and emerging health issues in Africa and throughout the world. The Unit is based at the UVRI Entebbe campus with established outposts in Kalungu, Masaka, Wakiso and Kampala Districts.

 

Job Summary: The Communications and Engagement Assistant will support the communications and engagement team to increase visibility of the CCHF study and providing communications support to the development of the CCHF study narrative reports.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with the CCHF project management team, support the implementation of the knowledge exchange strategy of the study;
  • With the support of the CCHF PI and the communications team, develop and review communication products including a study brochure, policy briefs, videos and newsletters and ensure that they are shared on the appropriate platforms;
  • Support in organizing study engagements to strengthen partnerships and knowledge exchange, documenting these major events and updating key platforms with reports in relevant formats;
  • Coordinate media engagements on behalf of the CCHF study and build useful relationships with the media that would boost the study’s visibility and positioning;
  • Attend team meetings, develop reports and contribute to management of the project’s risk register by identifying potential risks;
  • Support in the development and regular update of the study page on the LSHTM website, as well as the CCHF partnership website and social media to increase the visibility of the study and its knowledge outputs; and,
  • Provide communications support to the final report, including layout and design.





Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Degree in Mass Communication or other relevant discipline from a reputable University;
  • A minimum of two years of experience in communications and engagement role;
  • Experience in media engagement and event planning;
  • Knowledge of report writing;
  • Knowledge and experience in writing best practice stories;
  • Knowledge and experience in website management and social media;
  • Should possess Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including strong presentation and report-writing abilities, capacity to persuasively and effectively convey information to different audiences, etc;
  • Excellent knowledge of writing for the web and using web content management systems (CMS) such as Drupal, Word press, etc;
  • Good skills in photography and/or videography;
  • Desktop graphics software such as Adobe creative suite;
  • Excellent command of English and widely spoken local languages;
  • Proficiency in relevant software and applications (including but not limited to MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint;
  • Ability to translate technical language and complex research into communications suiting variety of audiences;
  • Interest in neglected tropical diseases and/or public health;
  • Ability to build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders;
  • Ability to prioritise, plan work and respond flexibly to unexpected changes or multiple demands;
  • Proactive;
  • Outcome driven; and,
  • High degree of professionalism.
