Purpose of the position:

“Joining Forces” is a global collaboration between six of the world’s largest child rights organizations – Child Fund, Plan International, Save the Children, SOS Children’s Villages, Terre des Hommes and World Vision. It aims to fight for child rights and end violence against children, by working together to share learning and experiences and maximize our impact.

 

In Uganda, the Joining Forces Coalition is led by World Vision Uganda and has recently developed a new three-year strategy and marketing plan to promote the joint aims of the coalition by addressing issues of violence against children and child participation with policy makers and other stakeholders.  The role of the Joining Forces Coalition Coordinator will be to promote close collaboration amongst member agencies for joint advocacy initiatives and joint marketing and fundraising initiatives. The Coordinator will also be the primary point person for coalition knowledge and information management and external dissemination, taking the lead in liaising with Regional and Global initiatives under the wider coalition outside Uganda.  The Coordinator will take an active lead in positioning the new Joining Forces Strategy with key donors and potential partners with the aim of raising new sources of revenue for collective action across coalition members. In addition, the Coordinator will support and act as secretary to the Steering Committee, enabling it to perform its duties effectively by ensuring strategic initiatives and actions are well managed and communicated.  The Coordinator will also lead the Technical Working group drawn from the member agencies with the aim of ensuring targeted and collaborative efforts to build on the collective knowledge, advocacy programmes and research work being undertaken by members including management of future project(s) under the alliance.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Coordination & Representation

  • Coordinate and support in-country initiatives of the wider Joining Forces coalition, leading on advocacy, campaigning and stakeholder engagement.
  • Facilitate the organization of quarterly (CD) Consortium Steering Committee meetings. Provide updates/reports by synthesizing key progress and challenges; present issues that require decision making by the Steering Committee and propose actions.
  • Comply with relevant World Vision policies related to child and adult safeguarding, whistle blowing and fraud / anti-corruption.
  • Represent the Joining Forces (JF) Uganda Coalition to internal and external stakeholders when relevant/opportune, including donors, partners and government.
  • Act as the key liaison between the JF Uganda Coalition and the Global Joining Forces For All Children Secretariat.
  • Ensure alignment of in-country efforts with global initiatives and learning; provide input and progress updates upon request.
  • Lead the Technical Working Group and ensure regular engagement with member representatives to ensure the latest thinking, practice and research are being accessed, developed and actioned.

Programme Development and Planning

  • Institute a practice of joint project planning with coalition members through the packaging of existing and new initiatives in support of fund-raising efforts to resource the J Strategy.
  • Map coalition member advocacy initiatives and programmes that address violence against children in order to provide clarity on unmet needs and areas for future focus
  • Support the Coalition members in identifying catalytic areas for programme expansion and opportunities for funding.
  • Liaise and link the alliance to key government Ministries Departments and Agencies including UN agency leads to secure opportunities for collaboration and / or influence in the child protection sector

Mobilizing & Managing Resources

  • Identify funding opportunities to resource and expand the funding available to support implementation of the JF Strategy
  • Build relations with potential donors, and lead or support new proposal development alongside Joining Forces members’ business development teams.
  • Manage budgets and timely reporting to existing / new donors as required, and coordinate partner reporting.

Knowledge and Information Management

  • Set up and curate information sharing platform for lessons learnt, case studies, reports and other key documents for coalition members
  • Lead development of publications for external engagement and establish and manage protocols for publishing and branding under Joining Forces
  • Collate and disseminate key data from member agencies on initiatives that contribute to the JF Strategy

Advocacy & Communications

  • Build a wider movement to end violence against children in Uganda.
  • Ensure that evidence is adequately produced and used to advocate for good practices with key stakeholders (international agencies, local government, civil society and communities).
  • Effectively lead national and district level campaign initiatives that adequately build on in-country partnerships.
  • Develop media partnerships and social media strategies; produce regular Joining Forces media pieces in support of the JF Coalition strategy.
  • Encourage and facilitate the active and regular sharing of good practice externally from the JF Coalition as the go to place for high quality evidence and insight on issues relating to Violence Against Children
  • Mobilise the alliance members to collectively advocate and influence key policy/ issues during identified key global moments
  • Coordinate and collaborate with the designated communication personnel in each of the 6 agencies to support key alliance communication needs





Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The applicant for the World Vision Joining Forces Coalition Coordinator job must hold a Master’s Degree in a relevant subject, such as (but not limited to) human rights, governance, social sciences, social work and social/public administration, education, development studies, law.
  • Training in Project Management, Community Development, Advocacy, Communications or any relevant field is an added advantage.
  • Knowledge and understanding of current national and global debates/developments on ending violence against children.
  • Strong leadership, management and coordination skills; minimum of 8 years experience in project and budget management, preferably managing multi-NGO projects (consortia).
  • Relevant experience in campaigning, advocacy/policy influencing, programming related to child protection, education and/or child rights. Experience of supporting child-led or child-participatory advocacy/campaigns is desirable.
  • A proven and demonstrable ability to design/drive and implement activities, advocacy and campaigns which influence attitudes in communities and across all levels of society.
  • Experience in donor reporting, engagement and resource mobilization.
  • Experience managing staff and teams.
  • Able to multi-task and work to tight deadlines, and a willingness to work flexible hours.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills including influencing, negotiation, steering and coaching.

  • Travel and/or Work Environment Requirement
  • Up to 20% travel in country
