Job Summary:  The Communications and Marketing Director will increase the overall reputation, trust, and income of World Vision Uganda. Provide strong strategic marketing and communications leadership for the organization. Lead in the development and implementation of an integrated strategy for the building of a high-performance communications and marketing function that is managed, structured, focused, and staffed for productive and quality work. This strategy will identify the key marketing and communications needs of World Vision Uganda, while setting and steering strategic communications and marketing goals and processes that are contextualized to and in alignment with its core ministry functions and goals nationally and with our global strategy, Our Promise. Ensuring alignment with global marketing and communications strategic objectives of; achieving high-quality and sustainable funding, ignite content, ignite global voices, and ignite staff.

 

The position will also lead the development and implementation of the National Resource Development or Local Resource Mobilisation strategy with the aim of establishing models of engagement that will grow local income. The Communications and Marketing Director will spearhead creation of value laden partnerships that will advance World Vision Marketing and National Resource Development goals.

 

Maintain high-level interaction with influential audiences from corporate organizations and high-net worth individual segments, including World Vision Uganda networks and raise awareness of the organisation and its work. The Communications and Marketing director will engage local organisations, associations, foundations, and churches to develop partnerships and generate resources to complement sponsorship, and grant funding and sustain technical programming in World Vision Uganda supported communities.

 

As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, provide leadership on risk management, establishing, and or strengthening systems that promote compliance to policies for Marketing and Communications operations. Lead on reputation risk management to promote agile responses to incidents and forward planning of controls through established World Vision global systems.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Marketing and Communications Strategy

  • National communications and marketing strategy is developed, and subsequent operating implications are realised to ensure an efficient and integrated framework exists, providing overall leadership and ownership of all local income streams into the national office
  • Lead the development of the World Vision Uganda Marketing and Brand strategy.
  • Lead development of a National Resource Development or Local Resource Mobilisation 5-year roadmap in alignment with World Vision Uganda Country Strategy goals and Objectives as well regular reviews in alignment with new strategy.
  • Provide oversight towards implementation to ensure that World Vision is intentionally profiled amongst targeted audiences.
  • A high performing marketing function is increasingly able to raise local sources of funding to support the ministry World Vision better and more sustainably
  • Income targets are met and exceeded
  • New products are developed and refined to continuously engage and gain support from private individuals and corporates
  • World Vision and its programmes are well profiled amongst Uganda targeted audiences.
  • There is increased awareness of the World Vision brand as a key partner in impacting the lives of children.
  • A high performing marketing function is established to support Local Resource mobilisation efforts.
  • There is growth of locally generated income from Ministry aligned products, approaches and partnerships.
  • High-quality and sustainable local funding streams are established





Lead the development and implementation of Local Resource mobilisation, marketing action plans and reporting

  • Establish functional Marketing and Fundraising mechanisms.
  • Engage in building relationships with corporates and philanthropy organisations and high-net worth individuals to invite their participation and contribution to World Vision’s mission.
  • Account Management- develop robust platforms and systems for donor retention.
  • Work towards the accomplishment of targets by obtaining sustainable funds, finances, and in-kind donations.
  • Take the lead in developing capabilities to enter into framework agreements and underlying contracts.
  • New product development: Collaborate with senior management and project leaders to design and develop specific fundraising products that are aligned with the country 2021-2025 Strategy.
  • Media relations-Maintain liaison with relevant Public Relations, internet, marketing agencies, and key media entities and influencers in the country.
  • Lead implementation of fundraising campaigns and other donor acquisition and cultivation efforts.
  • Reporting: Effectively package monthly and quarterly reports, target projections, fundraising analysis reports, and evaluations in line with the National Office Resource acquisition business plans.
  • Long-term market contexualised fundraising initiatives are implemented and maintained with local partnerships.
  • There is continuous innovation of engagement models with targeted audiences enabling World Vision to expand its reach and local funding streams

Strategic Communication and Brand Strategy

  • Children’s voices are amplified through high-quality, multi-purposed content that inspires and connects with target audiences
  • Impact-led content drives and grows engagement with key audiences, demonstrating World Vision expertise
  • Emergency communications content is available and timely, serving advocacy, marketing, and fundraising needs
  • Field, Technical Programme, Grant, Emergency communications are resourced, staffed, and focused – to deliver high-value content that is used internally and externally
  • Strategic media outreach and public engagement increases coverage of issues World Vision cares about and builds visibility and reputation, positioning World Vision as a trusted partner
  • Timely and strategic communications content grows website and digital traffic, increasing World Vision’s social community
  • Reputation risk is understood across senior leadership and is well managed
  • Leadership regularly engage with staff through tools that are simple, foster two-way dialogue and are appropriate to the context
  • Staff are aware of and participate in global and national moments, motivated to share stories, and communicate on key messages as World Vision Ambassadors
  • Build World Vision’s brand and equip a pool of spokespersons and thought leaders to effectively communicate World Vision’s mission, vision, and Christian identity
  • Ignite Content: Our stories demonstrate how we are keeping Our Promise to the world’s most vulnerable children, equipping storytellers to speak with authenticity, consistency, and depth
  • Ignite Global Voices: Our audiences engage in our mission and the issues we raise through compelling and aligned campaigns, thought leadership, digital channels, partnerships, and media
  • Ignite Staff: Our staff are connected, engaged, and inspired, unified by our organisational values, and equipped to fulfil Our Promise

Risk Management and Compliance

  • Lead in the development and establishment of guidelines/Due diligence and compliance processes to govern Local fundraising operations and partnerships.
  • Establish and, or strengthen systems to promote audit compliance and the World Vision Good name.
  • Work closely with the Region and Global offices to mitigate and respond to controversial events and risk incidents, ensuring quick response to/ and recovery from disruption.
  • Work closely with division directors to ensure that staff have a good understanding of all mandatory internal policies in order to enhance compliance.
  • Guidelines for Local Resource Mobilisation (LRM) are approved and being upheld.
  • A policy framework governing LRM is in place and operationalised.
  • World Vision’s name as a trusted Humanitarian partner and effective advocate for children is upheld in Uganda.
  • World Vision continues to maintain high levels of trust amongst its audiences.
  • There is continuous identification, addressing and monitoring of issues that have the potential to damage stakeholders’ perception of World Vision.

People Management

  • High performance of the Communications & Marketing Department, consisting of Creative Services, Public Engagement, Internal Engagement, Integrated Communications, Marketing Operations, Supporter Engagement, and Business Development, is ensured through the leading of; goal setting, prioritization, process management, and relationship management
  • Communications & Marketing Department is led and managed for increased performance





Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The applicant for the World Vision Communications and Marketing Director job must hold a Master’s Degree in Communications, Media, Journalism, Arts or similar
  • Ten years of experience in leading and managing marketing and communications teams in international humanitarian and development sector, business, or creative industries
  • Demonstrated experience managing corporate partnerships and developing major donor relationships
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Thorough knowledge of international development and the communication and media industry
  • Advanced Photo and Video production, editorial, graphic design and media skills
  • Proven experience of training and capacity building of others
  • Advanced level of computer proficiency, including editing skills across Adobe and Apple software for video, photo, media and design
  • Experience working with children and youth
  • Advanced technical skills in at least one or more of the major areas of the job, such as; creative services, public engagement, corporate communications, marketing operations, supporter engagement, business development, etc
  • Proven experience of training and capacity building of others
  • Spiritual maturity, interfaith knowledge and a biblical worldview – Ability to articulate and model WV’s Christian identity and mission in an inclusive way.
  • Demonstration of well-developed interpersonal skills, excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Self-management/resilience and emotional maturity.
  • Team player
