About US:

Mengo Hospital was founded in 1897 in Kampala, and is the oldest hospital in Uganda. It currently serves as an urban community hospital that provides modern medical care. Mengo Hospital provides comprehensive care including radiology, obstetrics, dentistry, orthopedics, and surgery. Additionally, Mengo Hospital provides critical training and education to health professionals through its various programs in midwifery and nursing, health sciences, and laboratory technology. Mengo Hospital also has a dedicated research and development team that works to find new solutions to health issues in Uganda.

 

Job Summary:  The Accountant will support sound business decision-making through the collection, analysis, investigation, management and accurate reporting of financial information within agreed deadlines. The role is also responsible for compliance with statutory obligations of the Hospital.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the Finance Manager with annual budget-setting process. Provide effective financial management, budgeting, and forecasting to budget holders across the organisation including detailed analysis.
  • Lead the capital budgeting process based on constraint analysis and discounted cash flow analysis.
  • Lead, manage, and motivate the Finance Team and promote collaboration across all Service Teams.
  • Lead on all internal and external reporting, alongside the Finance Manager, and ensure all funding requirements and compliance is met.
  • Liaise effectively with external auditors, coordinate internal and external audits, and attend to unresolved issues raised from audits.
  • Drive continuous improvement across the Finance Team within service delivery, processes, and systems.
  • Support the Finance Manager in long term financial planning for the organisation.
  • Support all costing, pricing and data analysis for reporting and funding projects.
  • Oversee and drive strong financial control across the organisation.
  • Develop and maintain financial accounting systems for cash management, accounts payable, accounts receivable and credit control.
  • Manage and monitor risk management policies and procedures to ensure that organisational risks are minimized.
  • Take full responsibility for performance management of all direct reports, focusing on all aspects of sound people management.
  • Identify trends and variations, identify/resolve issues and discuss them with line management, working groups and other relevant staff.
  • Recommend and effect appropriate revenue mobilization/ generation strategies as well as financial expenditure controls.
  • Support the Accountant – Reporting in analysing and collating information to produce financial reports e.g. income statements, balance sheets, cash flows and supporting schedules, compare actuals against budget, analyse and identify trends on a monthly basis.
  • Contribute to the preparation of Board papers on the financial status of the Hospital.
  • Adhere to approved accounting procedures/processes and internal controls that allow management to have confidence in the integrity of the financial reporting of the Hospital and monitor the execution thereof.
  • Provide oversight and support of debt collections to ensure that the Hospital makes timely recoveries that have an impact on working capital.
  • Ensure completeness, accuracy and validity in preparing statutory and management accounts.





Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The applicant must hold a graduate in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, Business or related discipline.
  • Professional Accounting qualification (ACCA or CPA)
  • At least four years’ experience in similar position
  • Good computer literacy with excellent use of Office-Excel, Word, Power point, Accounting packages
  • Excellent report writing skills
  • Strong communication and team leadership skills
  • Business and financial management skills
  • Negotiation, influencing, interpersonal skills
  • Problem solver with strong analytical and numeracy skills
  • Proactive, self-starter with strong organisational and time management skills
  • Ability to operate at a strategic level in addition to delivering at an operational level
  • Must hold very high professional integrity
