Job Summary:  The Cafeteria Cashier will be responsible for processing customer orders, collecting payments, and providing excellent customer service

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Cash handling and transaction processing: receive payment from customers for their food orders, accurately calculate the total amount due, and provide change when necessary. Use cash registers, point-of-sale (POS) systems, or other electronic payment devices to process transactions efficiently
  • Order taking and entry: record customer orders accurately, either by manually inputting the items into a POS system or by writing them down. Ensure that all ordered items are correctly entered to facilitate the preparation and serving process.
  • Customer service: Provide excellent customer service through greeting customers, answering their questions regarding menu items, portion sizes, and prices. To handle customer inquiries or complaints in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Menu knowledge: have a good understanding of the cafeteria’s menu offerings, including daily specials, ingredients, and any allergens or dietary restrictions associated with the food. Guide customers through the menu and make appropriate recommendations based on customer preferences.
  • Cash reconciliation and reporting: At the end of the shift, reconcile the cash drawer or register, ensuring that the amount of cash matches the sales recorded. Prepare daily reports summarizing sales, voids, and any discrepancies, which may be submitted to the cafeteria manager or accounting department
  • Inventory management: assist with inventory management by monitoring stock levels of items sold at the cafeteria. They may notify the cafeteria manager or relevant personnel when items need to be restocked to ensure continuous availability for customers
  • Cleanliness and organization: contribute to maintaining a clean and organized cafeteria environment by assisting in wiping down counters, restocking condiments and supplies, and ensuring the cashier station is tidy and well-stocked with necessary materials such as receipts, cash, and promotional materials
  • Compliance with policies and procedures: adhere to the cafeteria’s policies and procedures related to cash handling, food safety, and customer service.
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned from time to time

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The applicant must hold a Diploma in Business Studies, Management, Accounting or Finance
  • One year of working experience in a busy environment
  • Strong numerical skills and attention to detail
  • Proficiency in using cash registers or POS systems
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills
  • Basic knowledge of food items, ingredients, and dietary restrictions
  • Ability to handle cash accurately and efficiently
  • Organizational skills to manage transactions, receipts, and reports
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Integrity and trustworthiness when handling cash and customer information
  • Flexibility to work different shifts, including weekends and holidays, as cafeterias often have varying operating hours.
