Specifically in Uganda, AKF currently supports programming in education, early childhood development (ECD) and strengthening civil society.

 

About Madrasa Early Childhood Programme:

The Madrasa Early Childhood Programme- Uganda (MECP-U) is an initiative of the Aga Khan Foundation that supports holistic development of children aged 0-8 years. MECP-U works with diverse stakeholders including communities, civil society, government, and development partners to deliver high quality, innovative and impactful programming that is needs based and contextually relevant.

MECP-U is seeking dynamic and qualified individuals for a position of a Gender Officer.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • As a Gender Officer you will perform your duties under the close supervision of the Programme Director. The specific roles and responsibilities include:
  • Lead the design and implementation of MECP gender related activities in the implementation areas, as directed by project design.
  • Build staff capacity on gender integration and analysis in line with AKF Global Gender Equality policy and strategy to incorporate gender issues in all aspects of the program e.g., from M&E, budgeting, planning, scheduling and implementation of activities, to reporting and documentation.
  • Organize and facilitate community dialogues to enhance gender responsive approaches and male engagement.
  • Organize and facilitate different capacity building training and workshops for key stakeholders on women’s right and girls’ empowerment and create awareness about gender equality and rights among the community.
  • Participate in regular MECPU or Gender Focal Points monthly/quarterly meetings, meetings and training.
  • Document best practices, lessons learnt and success stories in gender mainstreaming and gender integration to facilitate improvements in decision-making throughout the project cycle and inform advocacy.
  • Establish linkages and good relationships with relevant government offices/authorities and likeminded NGOs in the area of ECD and Gender mainstreaming through participation in coordination and network meetings and activities.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The applicant must hold a bachelor’s degree in Gender studies, sociology, social work, Development studies, and other related social science fields
  • Three years of direct experience in working to promote gender equality and inclusive social development.
  • Evidence of developing and delivering high quality gender capacity development and learning opportunities, both internally and externally.
  • Demonstrated understanding of country level gender related issues related to pre-primary education.
  • Ability to evaluate and integrate gender equality strategic objectives into broader program strategies.
  • Clear evidence of delivering impactful, evidence-based, gender responsive interventions and projects.
  • Excellent analytical, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills in a cross-cultural context.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills in English; ability to speak one of the urban refugee language.
  • High analytical skills and the ability to assimilate and process information on a wide range of issues, excellent writing, communication. Agile thinker and able to work within and through systems.
  • Team player collaborates effectively to create a culture of knowledge sharing and team learning to strengthen business performance.
  • Committed to acting ethically and upholding safeguarding standards towards all staff, volunteers, and beneficiaries of the organization.
  • Strong IT skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, SharePoint, Databases, etc.).
