About Project:

The Program for Seed System Innovation for Vegetatively-propagated crops in Africa (PROSSIVA) is an ambitious five-year project led by IITA along with CIP and other implementing partners. The PROSSIVA project aims to enhance the efficiency, productivity, and profitability of vegetatively-propagated crop (VPC) seed systems in Africa through research and delivery of innovations that will overcome seed system bottlenecks. CIP is taking a lead for sweetpotato component. This involves strengthening commercial seed producers (CSPs) with upstream linkages to early generation seed (EGS) of market preferred varieties and linkages into farmer-managed seed systems. In addition, it is necessary to enhance the agronomic skills of seed growers to ensure the quality of seed production and reduce production costs. As part of this project, we are establishing experiments and demos. Therefore, we are looking for a candidate who is specialized in agronomy and who can able to participate in these experiments and demos actively.

 

Job Summary:  The position requires an agronomist to work in collaboration with public and private sector, seed producers, development agents, CIP’s senior agronomist and agricultural economist to design agronomic demos, analyze agronomic data and produces publications.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Field experience in sweetpotato quality seed and root production practices (planting, cultivation, soil fertility and irrigation management)
  • Establishment and management of on farm participatory research and demonstrations.
  • Data collection, analysis and reporting of sweetpotato seed production, agronomic and seed business related data
  • Partner and stakeholder collaboration and relationships
  • Development of training materials and experiential learning for farmers, seed producers and extension agents
  • Project management, budgeting and reporting procedures
  • Specifically, the RA will assist the Associate Scientist (Agronomist) in close collaboration with NaCRRI to:
  • Design, plan and conduct the training of sweetpotato commercial seed producers (CSPs) for quality seed and root production and silage making.
  • Set up and monitor quality control procedures for commercial sweetpotato seed production of target crops (with the regulatory body in MAAIF).

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The applicant must hold a Bachelor’s degree in plant breeding, agronomy, horticulture, seed technology, plant science, or other relevant agriculture discipline.
  • Preference will be given for candidate experience in both agronomy skill sets for handling sweetpotato or any vegetatively propagated crops (VPCs).
  • Working experience in seed companies
  • At least three years of relevant experience in managing a seed system, preferably in sweetpotato
  • Ability to prepare study protocols and conduct agronomic trials
  • Strong competencies in both quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis techniques.
  • Training experience, in particular experiential learning with adults preferred.
  • Knowledge of seed inspection systems for, particularly VPCs.
  • Ability to communicate and train extension personnel and farmers
  • Advanced skill in using Excel
  • Excellent interpersonal relationships skills and teamwork orientation
  • Experience with digital tools for data collection
  • Knowledge of developing business plans for commercial farm
  • Knowledge of a statistical package, preferably GENSTAT
  • Excellent communication and writing skills in English.
  • Knowledge of a local language used in Eastern Uganda
