About US:

The Insurance Regulatory Authority of Uganda (IRA) was established under section 14 of the Insurance Statute 1996 now The Insurance Act, (Chap213) Laws of Uganda, 2000 (Insurance Act) which came into effect on 4th April 1996 and commenced operations in April 1997. The establishment of the Insurance Regulatory Authority of Uganda was a consequence of Government’s adoption of the liberalization and privatization policies which ended its role of directly engaging in the provision of goods and services and taking on the role of supervisor or regulator.

 

Job Summary:  The Manager Complaints & Litigation will mainly ensure the provision of legal services, compliance with the provisions of the Insurance Act and other pertinent laws.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in monitoring enactments of laws and regulations and assess their impact on the operations of the Authority.
  • Participation in providing legal services to the Authority.
  • Effectively manage the Complaints Bureau provided for in the Insurance Act, by establishing a mechanism by which complaints are managed.
  • Represent the Authority in the Courts of Law.
  • Ensuring that all insurance players comply with the statutory requirements.
  • In conjunction with Supervision Department, analyze applications for licenses and ensuring that they satisfy legal licensing requirements.
  • Analyze texts of policy and proposal, forms and proposed variations therein and submit report
  • Prepare summarized report on complaints, on a monthly basis or at other intervals as the need may arise.
  • Lead, manage and supervise the Complaints bureau.
  • Carry out any other duty as may be assigned from time to time.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelors (Honors) degree in Law.
  • At least a Master’s Degree in Law
  • Diploma in Legal Practice
  • A valid Practicing Certificate.
  • Professional qualification in Insurance, ICSA or any other equivalent professional qualification.
  • Six years of general experience as an advocate in a similar/related organization, 3 of which must be in litigation at supervisory level in a reputable organization.
  • Experience in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) will be an added advantage.
