In 2021, Finn Church Aid (FCA) with funding from Women’s Bank (WB) established a project ‘Promoting Women’s Entrepreneurship in the Poultry Value Chain in Mityana, Uganda’.  The project aims to enhance economic self-reliance of 600 smallholder women maize farmers by engaging them in the maize/poultry value chain. The project will support 600 farmers with maize farming, initiate structures for maize producer organizations, savings and credit system (VSLA), and upgrade the capacities of the 600 women farmers in both production and business management

 

Job Summary:  The Project Assistant- – Economic Strengthening will facilitate the formation and running of all VSLAs under FCA support and lead the establishment, running, management of beneficiary IGAs especially those related to the maize/poultry value chain.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Mobilise targeted communities to participate in the assessment and selection of new project beneficiaries.
  • Support VSLAs and individual small holder women farmers in developing innovative IGAs for household income enhancement
  • Mobilise and coordinated communities, local leaders, cultural leaders, CSOs operating in the project area, etc to support implementation of economic strengthening interventions among targeted women small holder farmers across the project area.
  • Building the capacity of community based facilitators and volunteers in executing their duties through mentoring, coaching and empowerment.
  • Support VSLAs in developing innovative business strategies, constitutions and other guidelines aimed at effective performance.
  • Organise and conduct village level awareness meetings to communicate and publicise the project’s activities, identify community challenges related to the project, needs and present them to the line supervisor for immediate action.
  • Compile weekly written reports to the supervisor clearly indicating the performance of VSLAs and IGAs of small holder farmers.
  • Organise and conduct weekly coordination and planning meetings with community based facilitators to review and discuss work plans and share meeting minutes with the supervisor.
  • Visit project sites to review progress and provide on spot training to beneficiary small holder famers.
  • Facilitate effective participation of young people, PWDs and husbands of targeted small holder women in project activities.
  • Performs any other duties that may be assigned from time to time by project manager, supervisor or their designates.




Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The ideal candidate for the Finn Church Aid (FCA) Project Assistant- – Economic Strengthening job placement should hold a Bachelor’s Degree in economics, commerce, marketing, international development, gender studies, Education, Social work and social administration or related field of study.
  • Additional training in entrepreneurship, monitoring and evaluation, agriculture, micro-finance is an added advantage.
  • Two years of consistent experience in -household economic strengthening support role with a reputable NGO.
  • Past experience in building and maintaining productive relations, institutional linkages required with implementing and strategic partner agencies.
  • Leadership qualities and team management including mediation and conflict resolution;
  • Excellent communication, team building and training skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relations in and outside the organization. Able to ride a motor cycle and must possess a valid rider’s license;
  • Willing to reside in the selected project area and refugee settlement and possession of a valid motorcycle license.
  • High integrity, self-driven and able to set own work schedule with rigorous deadlines.
  • Ability to initiate and complete assignments and to work under demanding circumstances with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organization, supervisory, problem-solving, interpersonal, communication as well as team building and negotiation skills.
