Action Against Hunger-USA is part of the Action Against Hunger International network, which provides humanitarian relief in over 40 countries worldwide in the sectors of nutrition, health, water/sanitation, and food security. Action Against Hunger-USA, an independent NGO, currently manages operations in 8 countries: Kenya, South Sudan, Cambodia, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, Haiti and Somalia. Action Against Hunger-USA has over $75 million in programs, and approximately 2000 staff based in in the various country offices, Head Quarter in New York City and Operational Centre in Nairobi. Additional growth is anticipated.

 

Job Summary: The Volunteer – Communications will provide communications support to the Advocacy & Communications Coordinator and other Action Against Hunger Uganda staff to help them capture, document and represent the organisation’s work, successes and approaches. This increased documenting will help the organisation position itself within global Action Against Hunger and within the regional humanitarian and development context. The support given by the Volunteer – Communications will involve capacity building (such as training, and tools and guidance creation) and direct communications services (such as producing materials and providing editing). The Volunteer’s work will help define the communications-related responsibilities within Action Against Hunger Uganda so that decisions can be made about how these responsibilities will be met in the future.  The Volunteer – Communications role is responsive to the needs of the organisation and its staff, and as such the details of this TOR may change.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Planning and Integration

  • With the Advocacy & Communications Coordinator, develop a Communications Strategy and Plan for Action Against Hunger Uganda for 2022 and beyond.
  • Plan, organise and prioritise direct Communications support to ensure appropriate commitments are made and met.
  • Establish a 2022 Communications Schedule for a range of Communication types, including Social Media and Internal Communications.
  • Create guidance on how to use and maintain the communications schedule.

Documentation and repository management:

  • Produce editable one-pagers, fact sheets or briefings for programmes, projects, approaches and methodologies.
  • Provide editing support to the programmes team for reports, proposals and other documents.
  • Support the production of the 2021 Action Against Hunger Uganda Annual Report.
  • Produce templates for common documents, such as reports, concept notes and letters.
  • Produce forms to capture information for reporting, thought leadership and storytelling.
  • Establish an organised repository of documentation and information to reduce repeated effort and inconsistency.
  • Establish an organised repository of visual and layout elements, such as photographs, videos, logos and templates.
  • Provide photography support, through editing existing photos and taking new photos.
  • Meetings, Workshops and other Events preparation:
  • Provide editing and branding support for presentations and other event materials.
  • Provide speech writing support for Action Against Hunger staff and partners.
  • Provide promotional communications supports for the 2021 National Nutrition Convention.

Social media and other Online Presence:

  • Establish what online presence Against Hunger Uganda currently has and what presence it should have.
  • Create and deliver practical guidance on how to run social media accounts.
  • Set up monitoring of online media and other sources for mentions of Action Against Hunger Uganda.
  • Create guidelines of how to respond to mentions of Action Against Hunger Uganda.

Training and Knowledge Transfer:

  • Provide tailored and targeted instructor-led communications training (in person or virtually) for programme teams, including on branding, writing and photography.
  • Create tailored communications ‘quick guides’ and summaries.
  • Establish a shared communications FAQs document.
