Job Summary:  Under the overall supervision of the Senior Animal Health Officer/ ECTAD Global Programme Coordinator (NSAH),  the functional and administrative supervision of the FAO Representative in Uganda and the direct supervision of the ECTAD Country Team Leader in Uganda, and technical backstopping of the ECTAD regional team for Eastern Africa.

 

The incumbent will provide technical support to the National Veterinary Epidemiology Unit (NVEU) at National Veterinary Services, Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries) on data collection, collation, storage, analysis, interpretation and reporting of animal health events.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide NVEU with technical support/assistance to the preparation of weekly updates of Animal Health situation in the country, and prepare draft quarterly web technical reports/articles;
  • Act as a liaison technical officer between the NVEU and the national Emergency Operation Centre to provide regular updates on AH status/events at the EOC and participate in multi-sectoral discussions on prevention and response to public health threats of zoonotic disease origins,
  • Support technical assistance processes for the development of disease control program planning, including transboundary (TADs) and zoonotic diseases (PZDs);
  • Support the implementation of the FAO/OIE/WHO recommendations, including SET, PVS and JEE, to sustain the animal health surveillance system;
  • Participate in institutional surveillance data user’s group meetings and facilitate linkage with external stakeholders;
  • Support capacity-building programs for national epidemiology services, including implementation of In-service applied veterinary epidemiology training (ISAVET);
  • Perform other related duties as required or directed.





Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The applicant for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Epidemiologist (National Disease Informatics) job must hold a University degree in Veterinary Medicine and post-graduate study in field epidemiology or related fields
  • Five years of relevant experience in national or subnational animal health activities
  • Demonstrated knowledge on veterinary epidemiology
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the main aspects of prevention and control of high impact emerging and re-emerging zoonotic and non-zoonotic disease
  • Good technical report writing skills
  • Proven ability to conduct, and report on epidemiological studies, disease control
  • Experience in working on Animal Health Surveillance System
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with national and local partners in various governmental, private, and voluntary agencies.
  • Ability to manage and manipulate large datasets using standard statistical packages, and GIS tools.
