About US:

Uganda Harm Reduction Network (UHRN) is a national entity that responds to the drug use crisis in Uganda. The network works to advocate for practical interventions aimed at supporting and addressing issues of people who use and inject drugs. The network also seeks to provide a national platform for health and policy programs that promote good practices and advocate for a supportive environment for the adoption, implementation, and expansion of harm reduction programs for People Who Use and Inject Drugs in Uganda.

 

Job Summary:  The Advocacy and communications Officer will contribute to Uganda Harm Reduction Network’s vision and strategies focused on advocacy and communication for accessible, affordable services for people who use drugs. Working with the programs team; the Officer is responsible for supporting the designing and implementing communication strategies and contents that can influence policy change as well as social behavior change among PWUD.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Support the development and review of the UHRN’s Communication and advocacy strategies.
  • Manage and regularly update the UHRN’s online platforms including social media, website and related platforms.
  • Support the design and implementation of joint advocacy and SBCC campaigns in partnerships with networks, members, consortiums, coalitions, and technical working groups to which UHRN is a member
  • He/she shall represent UHRN in relevant advocacy platforms and fora and delegated by the supervisor.
  • Support the drafting and updating of UHRN’s publicity and behavioral change materials such as brochures, blogs, website, opinion columns, in-house magazine, case studies, articles, reports, and any other documentation required for communication and advocacy
  • Support capacity building on different aspects of advocacy and communication for the
  • UHRN’s network, members, and partners
  • Any other duties as assigned by their supervisor

  • Timely reports
  • Meet specified targets with expected outcomes
  • Disseminating information regarding organization interventions in a positive way with the relevant stakeholders




Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The applicant must hold a Bachelor’s degree in relevant field (mass communication Journalisms, social work and social administration, IT, humanities, or related field). Masters Degree is added advantage
  • Three years of working experience of related advocacy and communication employment/assignment
  • The Communications and Advocacy Officer should have experience in implementing organizational advocacy and communication strategies.
  • Experience with harm reduction and working with PWUD. He/she should demonstrate experience in coordination communication and advocacy activities in NGO related contexts.
  • He/she should have a results-oriented approach and proposes ways to innovate and continuously improve our communications products, practices, channels, and messaging
  • Track record in writing and editing articles, website content, reports, and press releases. Ability to quickly understand and absorb new topics, issue, and disciplines and distill relevant advocacy strategies from them.
  • Ability to deliver oral presentations to various audiences.
  • Excellent communication and project management skills; team player and facilitator.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English
  • Ability to live, work and travel in and around the Uganda
  • Experience in fundraising and proposal development
  • Strong appreciation of risks facing UHRN and the need to adhere to agreed policy guidelines in communications
  • Experience of networking with partners, coalitions and networks
  • Good understanding of the political contexts affecting access to healthcare
