About Us:
The MRC/UVRI Uganda Virus Research Unit on AIDS was established
following a request in 1988 from the Uganda Government to the British
Government for collaboration on the research of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency
Virus) infection and AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency. The Unit is a center of
excellence in HIV/AIDS related research. It conducts large-scale
epidemiological and intervention studies, clinical trials, virological and
immunological research and behavioural studies, and has generated a wealth of
research results that have been used to inform policy and practice that have
led to a large number of scientific publications in peer reviewed journals over
time.
Job Summary: The
Statistician will plan and perform statistical analyses and provide statistical
advice and data management support for studies and to members of the unit
Key Duties and
Responsibilities:  
·        
Actively
contribute to proposal writing and protocol development by providing advice on
statistical methods and study designs appropriate for these studies.
·        
Take
part in study planning: calculate study sample size; handle randomisation
tasks; advise on sampling and study designs; participate in development of study
tools; train data collectors; and develop Statistical Analysis plans in
conjunction with the study PIs and other statisticians.
·        
Data
Management: supervise data managers/programmers in the development of study
databases, data capture programmes, and databases; clean data; and receive,
generate, and resolve data queries.
·        
Statistical
analysis: Analyse data using appropriate statistical methods; prepare
results tables and graphs; and interpret results for PIs and others.
·        
Contribute
to writing papers and presentations: by writing the statistical methods and
results sections of papers; presenting results to national and
international conferences.
·        
Communication
& reporting: Keep study PIs, and Project Leaders informed of progress of
statistical issues, including data entry and analysis.
·        
Training:
Lecture and facilitate in training
courses in Biostatistics and Epidemiology organised by the Statistics
section, when asked to do so by the Head of section or course organiser.
·        
Mentor
and train other members of statistics in STATA and writing of do files.
·        
Guide
the data managers and statisticians of appropriate statistical methods.
·        
Management:
Appraise the performance of data managers and other staff as assigned to the
post-holder in the annual performance appraisal.



Qualifications, Skills and
Experience:
·        
The applicant for this job placement must hold a
Bachelor of Statistics or related
field; advanced qualification (preferably MSc) in Statistics or related
field.
·        
At
least two years’ experience in data management, and 1-year experience in
Statistical analysis.
·        
Previous
experience in training at graduate and post-graduate level
·        
Proficiency
in the use of data management and statistical analysis software e.g. Ms
Access, STATA, SPSS, or EPIINFO
·
