Johns Hopkins University/Center for Communication Programs (CCP) is a pioneer
in the field of strategic, research based communication for behavior change and
health promotion that has helped transform the theory and practice of public
health.
Job Background: The flip charts are being translated into local
languages (Lusoga and Karamojong -Bokora) to communicate more effectively with
the local communities. CCP is planning to conduct a pretest exercise for the
two translated flip charts in Nepak and Iganga districts. Data from the pretest
exercise will be used to improve their adaptability and relevance to the local
context. The field pretest will be done through two community education
sessions in each of the project locations. Community agents working with Water
Mission Uganda and Water Aid Uganda will be guided to conduct two education
sessions with local community members in each of the two districts. Discussions
will be conducted with both the community agents and the participating
community groups to share their experiences regarding use of the flip charts.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:  
Specifically, Pretest Coordinator will:
  • Keenly review the two flip charts and other
    relevant documents.
  • Develop a protocol and pretest tools in
    consultation with the Project Manager CCP
  • Regularly review the protocol and pretest
    tools with CCP and WASH partners.
  • Revise protocol and pretest tools and
    participate in a half day meeting to prepare for the pretest exercise in
    the field.
  • Prepare and organize pretest materials in
    consultation with the Project Manager CCP.
  • Orient partner staff and community agents
    (Iganga and Nepak) who will facilitate the community education sessions.
  • Carry out short training sessions for
    note-takers and Karamajong interviewers prior to the pretesting exercise.
  • Observe and supervise community education
    sessions in the field.
  • Conduct feedback discussions with the
    facilitators of the community education sessions.
  • Conduct feedback sessions with community
    members in Iganga.
  • Observe and supervise feedback sessions with
    facilitators and community members in Nepak.
  • Record all discussions on audio tape.
  • Provide needed logical support for the groups
    (stationery, tools, transportation)
  • The incumbent will ensure that tape recording
    devises are functioning properly, and have working batteries.
  • Prepare reports in English of all of the
    feedback sessions with facilitators in Iganga district.
  • Coordinate with selected partner
    representatives in Nepak to prepare pre-test report for Nepak.
  • Assist with other activities necessary for
    the smooth operation of the pretest exercise.
  • Prepare and submit a hard copy and soft copy
    report of the pretest exercise, including recommended revisions to the
    flipcharts.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The ideal candidate should hold a Bachelor’s
    degree in social sciences, communication or related field and experience
    conducting qualitative research in Uganda.  
  • Good people skills and writing skills;
  • Computer literacy skills i.e. proficiency in
    MS Word required.
  • Fluent in Lusoga and English. Fluency in
    other Ugandan languages a plus. 
Remuneration:  CCP will
pay a daily rate commensurate with the research assistant’s past salary or
income history and the current market rate for research assistants.  CCP will provide transportation and pay for
meals and accommodation to the consultant during field activities.
Duration: This assignment will take place during April and
May, 2016, for a total of 16 days, over a 3 – 4 week period.
