Driver USAID Project Jobs - Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET)


Job Title:        Driver
Organisation: Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET)

About US:
The Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET), funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), is a leading global provider of objective, evidence-based food security information and analysis. Created in 1985 in response to famines in East and West Africa, the project provides global coverage with a mix of presence and remote monitoring countries. The FEWS NET implementing team includes NASA, NOAA, USGS, USDA, Kimetrica, and Chemonics International, the last of which manages the Washington-based technical office and more than 20 field offices.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Drive and maintain the project vehicle.
  • As assigned and/or preapproved by the driver’s supervisor, drive assigned project vehicle daily, including on scheduled field trips, project-related trips within Kampala and other driving assignments as required.
  • Clean assigned vehicle both inside and out.
  • Check assigned vehicle weekly to ensure that it is operational and safe to drive. At least on a weekly basis, check the oil, radiator, fan belt, brake fluid, wipers, tires, lights, and signals.
  • Initiate and supervise any repairs required on assigned vehicles with supervisor’s approval.
  • Initiate and supervise routine periodic maintenance of assigned project vehicles, including oil and filter changes, tune-ups, and professional cleaning by high-pressure hose based on the manufacturer’s instructions on optimum maintenance requirements.
  • Fulfill project reporting requirements and maintain records on vehicle routing and vehicle condition.
  • Ensure passenger safety by obeying traffic laws, driving carefully, and ensuring each person in the vehicle wears a seatbelt.


Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The Driver should possess a UCE certificate
  • At least five (5) years’ experience as a driver with an International NGO.
  • Hold a clean and valid Driving permit.
  • Basic skill in motor mechanization and maintenance.
  • Expertise in driving both manual and automatic transmission vehicles
  • Experience in driving long upcountry distances.
  • General Knowledge of Uganda Geography and locations of major towns.
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to be a strong team player
  • Present a professional demeanor and exercise professional judgment
  • Ability to prioritize work assignments; capable of making decisions which will foster timely work completion
  • Excellent and demonstrated organizational skills
  • Ability to perform well with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrate leadership, integrity and versatility

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
Ensures provision of reliable and secure driving services.
  • Ensure the respect of the Ugandan traffic law while driving MI vehicles.
  • Follow the Line Manager’s planning and instructions.
  • Carry out office out-door messenger related duties.
  • Keep all personal documents as well as those of the vehicle with you and check that they are valid (driving licence, insurance paper)
  • Fill in the Log book every day according to MI procedures.
  • Respect MI security rules.
Ensure the maintenance of the vehicle with respect to MI vehicle management
  • Carry out daily checks before starting up the vehicle (oil level; water level; pressure of the tires         etc.)
  • Wash the car when needed and upon request from line manager.
  • Make sure that the security tool box and first aid kit are complete and on board.
  • Inform the line manager when service is necessary.
  • Solve minor technical problems.
  • Inform the logistics department of any major repairs to be carried out.
  • Record all the maintenance done in the log book of each vehicle
Ensure the respect of the departure and arrival time of your movement.
  • Inspect and prepare the vehicle the day before departure so as to be on time.
  • Prepare additional equipment to be brought along according to the needs (fuel, stickers, flags, tools, medical kit).
  • Guarantee the good loading and unloading of the car and goods in an appropriate way.
  • Know the area map, especially MI staff houses, INGOs offices and relevant partners’ offices.
  • Ensure that non MI staff sign a Waiver of Liability form.


Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The Malteser International Driver should possess a UCE
  • At least two (2) years’ experience as a driver with an INGO.
  • Hold a clean and valid Driving permit with DL class
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Good communication skills
  • Good command of the English language
  • Must be a resident of Arua
  • Defensive driving added advantage
  • Experience working in Westnile Region is an added advantage

About Project:
With funding DGF, UJCC is supporting two Local Governments in Lango Region (Lira and Amolatar Districts) in strengthening their capacity develop and implement Gender and Equity responsive plans and budgets in line with the Public Finance Management Act (2015) and to ensure that government laws, policies and regulations are implemented effectively in the local governments.

Job Summary:  The Project Driver will provide secure and timely driving services to transport passengers and/or goods. Deliver payment transfers to the bank and/or the suppliers, assist with postage and with pick up of office purchases, including flight tickets and any other tasks required by Head of Administration or his/her substitutes. Act as a backup for the Receptionist and assist with meeting room re-arrangement for various meetings/events.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
Transport of persons, goods and / or documents
  • Provide transportation for UJCC staff and visitors
  • Scheduling and registering transportation requests
  • Deliver correspondence and assist in processing various permits (such as airport pass etc.)
  • Facilitate airport pick-ups for visitors and transportation during official visits  
Service vehicle maintenance management
  • Schedule vehicle examination for service and apply for the renewal for the vehicle license
  • Determine when and what kind of maintenance the vehicle needs, keep track of general maintenance schedules, especially car tyre condition
  • Ensure sound running of the vehicle assigned and arrange minor repairs where necessary
  • Check oil and tyres properly and keep the service vehicles in clean condition, both inside and outside
  • Keep track of timely car insurance renewals
  • Maintain log book of the vehicle on daily basis and update monthly mileage records


Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The applicant must hold a Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (A-level certificate)
  • Valid driving license with minimum of CM class
  • At least five years’ experience as driver with good driving record
  • Previous experience with driving a four wheel driver manual vehicle
  • Experience with driving to remote locations on project field trips and driving off the road in difficult conditions
  • Computer literacy and familiar with software packages under Windows and Email
  • Being well-organized and systematic
  • Careful, accountable, responsible and punctual
  • A team player
  • Willingness to work long and irregular hours and on public holidays as required
  • Willing to take regular and extensive travel to project areas
  • Commitment to the aims of UJCC
  • Knowledge and Understanding of transportation laws
  • Good knowledge about car mechanics
  • Good communication skills

About US:
The Ministry of Water and Environment in partnership with UNDP is implementing the Building Resilient Communities, Wetland Ecosystems through Restoration of Wetlands and Associated Catchments Project. The project aims at upgrading hydro-meteorological network, weather forecasting system and flood forecasting system. The project has three components namely; (1) Restoration and management of wetland hydrology and associated catchments, (ii) Improved agricultural practices and alternative livelihood options in wetland catchments and (iii) Strengthening access to climate and early warning information to farmers and other target communities.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Drive the vehicle to different points as directed by the supervisor
  • Ensure vehicle is maintained and minor repairs carried out
  • Ensure major mechanical faults are reported
  • Maintain basic vehicle records
  • Ensure the vehicle is kept clean
  • Carry out other duties as maybe assigned from time to time by the supervisor


Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
