About US:

The Women’s Situation Room (WSR) is a neutral, non-partisan mechanism that mobilizes women and youth to promote peaceful and democratic electoral processes. The WSR also promotes the enhanced participation of women in peace building in line with the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325.

 

Founded by The Angie Brooks International Centre in Liberia, the WSR was first implemented in 2011 during the presidential elections in Liberia. It has, since then, been replicated in Uganda in 2016 and in other African countries including Senegal, Sierra Leone, Kenya, Nigeria and Ghana. It has been acknowledged as an effective mechanism for promoting peaceful elections by the United Nations Security Council and by the African Union, which requested that the WSR be implemented in all African elections.

 

The WSR involves all electoral stakeholders in consultative engagements to ensure peace before, during and after elections. It includes a physical Situation Room where women are involved in advocacy for peace; political and legal analysis of the situation; and interventions that may include mediation to avert conflict.

 

The overall objective of the WSR Uganda 2021 is to promote the full and active participation of women and youth in ensuring peaceful elections and to contribute to the strengthening and refinement of the WSR mechanism for ensuring peace in African elections. The Women’s Situation Room Uganda will be hosted by Uganda Women’s Network (UWONET); with the Women’s International Peace Centre serving as the WSR Secretariat.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Administrative Assistant the Driver will perform the following functions:

  • Driving of office vehicles for the transportation of staff and Eminent Women on official duties
  • Delivery and collection of mail, documents and other official correspondence as requested by the supervisor
  • Conscientious and careful handling of the vehicles and reporting of all faults or accidents to the responsible authorities
  • Maintenance of the assigned vehicles, making routine checks of oil, water, battery, brakes and tyres as necessary
  • Daily cleaning of the vehicles
  • Maintenance of a Log Book on mileage, fuel consumption and servicing; and periodically submitting it to the Accounts Assistant for verification and processing
  • Writing a weekly vehicle analysis report for monitoring

 


Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The applicant must hold an  Ordinary Level Certificate of Education
  • Possession of valid driver’s license classes B, CM and DL
  • At least 5 years of experience as a driver in a Non-Governmental Organisation
  • Experience in driving senior officials
  • History of a safe driving record
  • Experience driving a 4X4 vehicles on rough terrain
  • Experience in defensive driving
  • Experience in driving upcountry and knowledge of the regions in Uganda is an added advantage
  • Language Requirements: Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of local languages spoken in Uganda is an asset

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees was established on December 14, 1950 by the United Nations General Assembly. UNHCR’s mandate under the Statute of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is to lead and co-ordinate action for international protection to refugees; seek permanent solutions for the problems of refugees and safeguard refugee rights and well-being. UNHCR has an additional mandate concerning issues of statelessness, as it is given a designated role under Article 11 of the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness.


Job Summary: 
The Driver in the UNHCR Office is normally supervised directly by the Administrative Officer/Associate/Assistant or another staff member when the scale of the Operation so requires it. Besides driving, the incumbent is responsible for upkeep and maintenance of the assigned UNHCR vehicle(s) as per technical guidance and specifications established by the Organisation. S/he is required to follow strict instructions and security guidance provided by the supervisor. While the basic function of a driver is to drive the official vehicles of UNHCR, s/he may be called upon to perform minor maintenance and repair of UNHCR vehicles.

 

The Driver has regular contacts with staff within the UNHCR Office and with others (including Partners, government authorities, etc.) outside UNHCR involving a limited exchange of information

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:  

  • Drive UNHCR vehicles for the transport of authorized passengers, deliver, and collect documents and other items.
  • Meet official personnel at airports or other locations and facilitate immigration and customs formalities as required.
  • Perform day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicles; check oil, water, battery, brakes, tires, etc. and ensure that the assigned UNHCR vehicles are road or waterway worthy and maintained up to the established security standards.
  • Perform minor repairs, arrange for other repairs, and ensure that the vehicle is kept clean.
  • Ensure that the steps required by rules and regulations, or other local procedures, are taken in case of involvement in an accident.
  • Log official trips, daily mileage, gas consumption, oil changes, greasing, etc.
  • Ensure that instructions and security guidance provided by the supervisor and security focal point are strictly followed.
  • Ensures valid documentation for passengers, items or cargo in vehicle.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

 


Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The ideal candidate for the United Nations UNHCR Driver job placement should have completed Primary School education. Required.
  • At least two years of previous job experience relevant to the function is required.
  • Possession of a driving licence and knowledge of driving rules and regulations is required.
  • Knowledge of English and/or UN working language of the duty station if not English is required.
  • Certificate in Auto mechanics is desirable

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

·         Transports Country Office staff, consultants, and visitors to designated approved locations.

·         Ensures safety, cleanliness, security and maintenance of the vehicle.

·         Provides day-to-day maintenance of the vehicle with timely oil changes, inspections, brakes, and tire pressure.

·         Makes arrangements for major repairs for the vehicle when needed.

·         Ensures all required documents with the vehicle are in order and up to date regarding vehicle insurance, vehicle logs, and necessary spare parts.

·         Plans route and requirements based on schedule or ad-hoc requests by the office.

·         Ensures passengers adhere to all road safety regulations.

·         Fulfills special requests by picking up and delivering items as directed and running errands.

·         May provide protection for clients in locations deemed high risk.

·         Performs any other duties as assigned.

 


Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

·         The applicant for the FHI 360 Driver job must hold a High School Diploma/GED or equivalent

·         0-3 years of related driving experience.

·         Must have a trade test certificate, a valid driving license and a clean driving record.

·         Experience in the operation of large vehicles; or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
