About the Company:
Uganda Christian University (UCU) is an authentic Christian institution established by the Church of Uganda in 1997 in response to a call for quality university education with a Christian perspective. Uganda Christian University replaced the historic Bishop Tucker Theological College which trained clergy and educators during its 84-year history from 1913-1997. The local chief, Hamu Mukasa, granted land for the college to operate in Mukono.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the daily operations of the Learning Commons, ensuring a welcoming and productive environment.
- Participate in the recruitment, training, and development of Learning Commons student assistants who will provide support as peer tutors and technology assistants.
- Develop and implement policies, procedures, and best practices for the Learning Commons.
- Collaborate with academic departments, student services, and other stakeholders to identify and meet the needs of students.
- Plan and coordinate workshops, events, and programs that support student learning and engagement.
- Promote the Learning Commons through various communication channels, including social media, email, campus events, etc
- Coordinate the integration and utilization of technology within the Learning Commons.
- Provide research assistance services and assist students with academic writing by recommending and training them on useful writing resources and tools, and emphasizing academic integrity in collaboration with the UCU Writing Centre.
- Instruct and assist in the preparation and teaching of classes both individual and group patrons in the use of application software available in the learning commons. Collaborate with other library units and assigned faculty or school to provide liaison services.
- Monitor and analyze usage patterns of the Learning Commons provide periodic reports and recommend changes.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Must have a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science, Information Technology, Computer Science or a related discipline from a recognized institution of higher learning
- Must have a Bachelor’s degree in Library, Information Science, Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related discipline from a recognized institution of higher learning
- Must have at least 5 years of relevant library work experience with a minimum of 2 years in a supervisory role within an academic library setting.
- Must have experience working in an academic environment, research or innovation hub, and integration of technology in educational settings.
- Should be technology-oriented
- Should be able to train and interact effectively with students and faculty, in an academic setting.
- Current experience and working technical knowledge of software such as Microsoft Windows or Linux operating systems, Microsoft Office applications, and other common productivity tools, library software, bibliographic reference software, data analysis software, and other Open-Source Software.
- Should possess excellent oral and written communication skills with demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with a variety of staff and patrons
- Should have the ability to participate within a cooperative work environment.
- Should be familiarity with emerging trends in library services, information resources, and technologies and the ability to identify and implement appropriate changes within a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
