About US:

The Medical Research Council (MRC UK) is an internationally recognised centre of excellence with dominant research themes in the areas of HIV and emerging infections, vaccines and immunity, and chronic diseases and cancer. Through a multidisciplinary approach, intersecting basic science, epidemiological research, social-behavioural research and the conduct of new intervention evaluation studies, the Unit contributes knowledge on changing epidemics and diseases, the evaluation of innovative health care options, treatment and prevention and the development of health policy and practice in Africa and worldwide. Following the signing of strategic transfer agreements between the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the Medical Research Council (MRC UK), the Unit formally joined LSHTM on 1st February 2018. The exciting new partnership will boost research capacity into current and emerging health issues in Africa and throughout the world. The Unit is based at the UVRI Entebbe campus with established outposts in Kalungu, Masaka, Wakiso and Kampala Districts.

 

Job Summary:   The Social Science Research Assistant will mainly recruit, consent and assess participants from the GPC and neighbouring villages (n~10K) for common mental illnesses including major depressive disorder (MDD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that participants for the study are mobilized and recruited into the study;
  • Administer study information to participants and obtain informed consent;
  • Translate study documents;
  • Assess study participants for common mental disorders;
  • Perform study procedures as required by the protocol i.e; – Phlebotomy; Vital check or observations; collecting other specimen; dispensing drugs among others; and, label study samples collected from study participants.
  • Provide counselling services to study participants;
  • Make referral of study participants in accordance with the guidelines and protocol;
  • Work with the team to have samples timely transported or transferred to the laboratory for analysis;
  • Provide medical care to study participants and report any adverse events to the study clinicians or coordinators;
  • Refer participants found to have serious mental disorders to psychiatric facilities for further management;
  • Take good custody of the study’s resources including ipads onto which the study questionnaire is loaded;
  • Ensure filing of collected data and project documents; and,
  • Assist in developing study training manuals.





Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The applicant must hold a Diploma in nursing of clinical medicine from a recognised institution or related;
  • Registration with the Allied Health Professional’s council;
  • Training in counselling;
  • GDPR and HSP/GCP training;
  • Two years of experience in a clinical research setting, preferably including experience in social and behavioural science research;
  • Experience of working within a multi-disciplinary team with clinical/epidemiological researchers;
  • Prior experience in handling patient records and Case Report Forms;
  • Should have basic knowledge on design of qualitative research tools, data collection, handling and reporting;
  • Proficiency in computer use (MS word, Excel, Access, SSP);
  • Should at least be self-driven;
  • Excellent social and communication skills;
  • Excellent organizational skills;
  • Able to work independently as well as part of a team;
  • Independence/Ability to work under minimum supervision;
  • Ability to work well under pressure and to maintain effectiveness during changing conditions;
  • Highly motivated and team oriented, but also able to work independently;
