Job Summary: Responsible for; undertaking appraisal and analysis of financial information of educational loan applicants to determine loan repayment capacity and credit worthiness as well to assess any risk exposures in order to aid UGAFODE Credit committees to make informed credit decisions, offer support in building Education finance (Edu-Finance) capacities of all Credit Staff through imparting appropriate knowledge and technical skills. Taking lead in reporting and managing relationship with Partners for the Edu-finance projects and or schemes under implementation ensuring all activities are implemented in line with regulations, Laws and or Acts as well as UGAFODE’s credit policy and procedures.

 

This role also involves;

Taking lead in proactively driving the growth of the Edu-Finance portfolio through the mobilization of Edu-Finance clients in the targeted pilot project zones as well as across the entire network, supporting the branch teams to scout for low-income schools, managing sales drives and marketing activities aimed at enrolling low-income schools to open collection accounts and access Edu-finance loans as well as manage the customer relationship management.

 

Being the Edu-finance Champion of UGAFODE and will play a very active role in visiting schools, understanding their needs and pushing for the uptake of UGAFODE’s financial products and coordinating the implementation of non-financial benefits for low-income schools such as the School Leadership training.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Edu-finance loans client’s appraisals and credit analysis: Spot-check SME Educational loans client businesses and review loan appraisal proposals prepared by branches for accuracy, risks, credit worthiness, collateral coverage and completeness of documentation as per credit policy and procedures. Presenting Agric loan proposals to the Head Office Credit Committees (HOCC and ECC) in line with the credit approval limits
  • Edu-finance loans portfolio growth: Take lead and full-accountability for championing the growth of the Educational loans portfolio across the branch network through supporting the design and implementation of innovative Educational loan products and or credit schemes as well as supporting the implementation and growth of portfolio through hands-on client acquisition (i.e. Champion goes out and sources clients and builds pipeline) or training of relevant personnel in branches to do this
  • Ensuring good Educational loan portfolio quality management: Maintain good Educational loans portfolio quality as per the institutional targets by ensuring good quality credit appraisals and analysis, good credit under writing and documentation at all levels, and that branches are adequately discharging Educational loan portfolio management activities (monitoring and recovery) in a timely manner while ensuring complete documentation of loan recovery efforts through preparation of Call reports and Demand notices issued in compliance with UGAFODE’s standard loan Delinquency Escalation Procedure(DEP).
  • Support with Capacity building: Takes full-lead and responsibility of guiding branch Credit Officers, Credit Supervisors, Branch Managers, and Regional Managers charged with fulfilling credit functions of the institution with Edu-finance training, loan appraisal, credit analysis and support in guaranteeing a good Edu-finance loan portfolio through conducting field visits to branches to specifically monitor and review the performance of Edu-finance loans, identify risks and propose recommendations for improvement, impart technical agribusiness knowledge and skills.
  • Manage the existing Credit Guarantee Schemes: Manage Edu-finance credit guarantee schemes implemented in partnership with external partners – relationship management with partners, booking loans in the Credit Guarantee platforms and undertake timely reporting of the Educational loans portfolio under credit guarantee and new loans books in the agreed reporting periods to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Reporting: Prepare monthly reports on Edu-finance loan portfolio performance analysis for growth trends covering outstanding number of loans, value of the loans, disbursements both numbers and volume, portfolio quality trends in respect to PAR, loan arrears, NPLs, loan loss provision expense and Write-offs all disaggregated at Global, Regional, Branch, Credit Officer, sector designation and product levels.
  • Support with debt recovery efforts: Support the Head of Credit to design and implement loan recovery strategies and work closely with the Regional Managers, Branch Managers, Credit Officers, Credit Supervisors, Debt Recovery Supervisors and Debt Recovery Officers to ensure the designed debt recovery strategies are timely implemented by branches to minimize the value of loan arrears, value of loan loss provision expense and written-offs.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The ideal applicant must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting or Business Administration
  • At least two years of experience as Branch Manager and or Branch Credit Supervisor in a Financial institution.
  • Extensive in-depth knowledge and hands-on experience in Education Finance (Edu-finance) and related risks.
  • Excellent credit analysis, credit underwriting skills & competencies, networking and stakeholder management.
  • Ability to work under pressure and adhere to strict deadlines.
  • Willingness to travel to the field/visit schools for 75% of work time.
  • Strong Planning, organizing, Monitoring, Analytical and Customer service skills. As well as; Teamwork, Influencing, Negotiation and Business drive.
  • Knowledge of the full MS Office suite
