Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Water Treatment

  • The Operator must be able to work with minimal supervision and will be required to perform a wide variety of duties and tasks to ensure an adequate supply of water for human consumption and firefighting activities.
  • Ability to recognize potential operational or mechanical problems related to the water treatment process, make emergency repairs and adjustments to components of the water treatment plant including water intakes, pipes, water storage vessels, chemical treatment equipment controls, circulation pumps, and valves, to advise other operational staff or supervisor.
  • The Operator is responsible for obtaining field samples, lab testing, organizing data and detailed record management, to standards set by the various regulatory authorities.
  • Accurately reads gauges, dials and other instrumentation that depict and/or record data.
  • Interpret readings from SCADA systems, meters, gauges, probes, and related controls and equipment to maintain proper pumping rates, flows, and treatment processes and to make necessary minor operational or mechanical adjustments.
  • The Operator shall perform all work in a safe and time efficient manner, following WHIMIS guidelines, the safe work policies, practices and procedures in the Town of Turner Valley Safety program, as well as the guidelines stipulated in the Alberta Environment Operating Approval.
  • Assist in the routine repair and general cleaning of facilities, performing general plant maintenance work such as sweeping, cleaning, painting, vehicle maintenance, grounds maintenance, parts pickup and deliveries, and other related activities.
  • Represent the Town as a Certified Operator at educational conferences, and other potable water stewardship meetings, by conducting themselves in a professional and safe manner.
  • Assist the public by listening to concerns, inquiries, and taking the appropriate actions necessary to correct them or advise a Supervisor when necessary.
  • Complete daily activity time sheets; report on variances in daily work plans.
  • Immediately report vandalism, mechanical difficulties, damage and hazardous conditions.
  • Utilize various hand tools, power tools, cell phone, etc.

Water Distribution

  • The Operator is an important front line customer contact point, and is responsible for responding promptly and courteously to customer complaints, investigating complaints on site and interacting with customers to identify problems and to explain solutions.
  • Perform a variety of customer service duties including reading, and installing water meters, delivering shutoff notices during emergency water main operations, setup hydrant meters as necessary, perform related activities, and assist others when necessary
  • Ability to exercise constant care when working in traffic to place barricades, signs and traffic cones around work sites to protect operators and the public.
  • Read and update water distribution maps and as-built plans and blueprints.
  • Perform maintenance and repair activities in the water distribution system including pipe line mains, valves, fire hydrants, pumps, meters, backflow devices and related appurtenances.
  • Carry out all necessary maintenance and adjustment of tools and equipment while keeping the equipment in a safe, clean and tidy condition. Perform daily circle checks and report defects and, if necessary complete small repairs in a prescribed manner.
  • Assist in the construction, repair and maintenance of the water distribution systems.
  • Lay out and install traffic signs and pavement markings.
  • Flushes and disinfects water lines and monitors turbidity levels, and inspects new construction.
  • Maintain logs of daily activities.
  • Provide general laboring and other duties as required.

Operating and Process Control

  • Operating through a centralised control room for all Brewing process areas according to the standard operating procedures, and supporting the plant control system under instructions and guidance of the E&F Technician Artisan, shift artisan, BAM, BTE, BM, Specialist.
  • Constantly reviewing process performance against target, and recording short stops. Where process performance does not meet target, or trends or opportunities timeously. indicate the existence of problems, corrective action must be initiated.
  • Reviewing waste trends to identify problems
  • Carrying out the required quality checks as described in the quality control and analyses work practice (if applicable to Control Room Operator).
  • Responding rapidly to upstream or downstream triggers that could result in quality or production problems.
  • Appropriate problem solving approaches, as detailed in the problem solving work practice must be followed.
  • Performing housekeeping tasks, applying 5s principles and following safe work practices.
  • Unsafe work practices must be identified and corrected.
  • Assisting fellow team members in the execution of their tasks.

Wastewater Collection

  • The Operator, under supervision, provides a safe, efficient and reliable collection and transportation of wastewater by performing system cleaning and repairs.
  • Perform routine calibration and safety checks on equipment (e.g. gas monitors, SCBA equipment).
  • Inspect, diagnose, and locate difficulties in the wastewater collection systems.
  • Assists with operating, maintaining and repairing the wastewater sewer collection system, and pump stations, to ensure the safe and efficient transfer of wastewater through these local systems.
  • Ability to exercise constant care when working in traffic to place barricades, signs and traffic cones around work sites to protect operators and the public.
  • Work alongside line flushing and inspection contractors, ensuring safety to the general public.
  • Perform preventive maintenance functions on wastewater collection system equipment; identify equipment maintenance needs.
  • Interpret drawings, blueprints, schematics and diagrams for a variety of wastewater collection systems.
  • Records information and files reports for equipment operation and maintenance of Wastewater flows.
  • Maintain records on work, time, and material records.
  • Actively participate in a team environment.
  • Shall participate in training exercises relating to disaster response.
  • Respond to emergency calls.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Work Environment and Schedule:

  • This position is scheduled for 40 hours per week Monday to Friday 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, and shall include early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • This position is required to work shift and or weekends and will be responsible to participate in the emergency “on-call” list and “on-call” rotation. Will involve some after hours and on-call activities
  • Additionally, the position requires; long periods of standing, walking, moving equipment, heights, slippery surfaces, working in inclement weather conditions, and also be able to lift over 50 lbs.
  • This position endures exposure to bright/dim light, wet or humid conditions, disease, pathogens, extreme noise levels, traffic, toxic/caustic chemicals, fumes, noxious odors, moving machinery, grease, heights, dusts, pollen, extreme inclement weather, temperature extremes. May be exposed to inclement weather conditions and hazardous materials.
  • The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of smell, depth perception, and texture perception. There may be the requirement to work in close proximity to hazardous materials and one may be exposed to unpleasant sights and smells. He/she must take the necessary precautions to protect eyes, nose and skin from irritation and infection.

Tools and Equipment Used

  • Electrical testing equipment, Safety PPE equipment, generators, grinders, torches, hammers, pneumatic chipping tools, power tools, motor vehicles, face shields, gloves, goggles, gauges, laboratory meters and equipment, shovels, rakes, wrenches, chain saw, calculator, electric meters.
  • Basic hand tools to be provided by employee.

  • This position requires operators to troubleshoot problems and exercise critical thinking in the execution of their duties.
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and the ability to accurately use a wide range of portable monitoring and laboratory testing equipment. Ability to take due care and attention when installing equipment without damaging exteriors of businesses or residences.
  • This position may perform work in potentially hazardous environments including working in traffic, and entering vaults or manholes. Other hazards may be encountered through entering domestic and commercial properties.
  • Perform a variety of manual tasks for extended periods of time and in unfavorable weather conditions.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Good oral and written communication skills to liaise with a variety of staff, clients, suppliers, keep logs and reports.

  • Mechanical, electrical/instrumentation, process control, programming, biological and water hydraulics aptitude.
  • Basic mathematical principles.
  • Able to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions, and able to complete forms and records relevant to the job.
  • Willingness to be enrolled in equipment training and Health & Safety courses





Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The ideal applicant must hold a Bachelor of Science degree and 1 year experience in operating a BTS plant
  • Must possess an Alberta Environment Utilities Operator Certification in all of the following; (Water Treatment I, Water Distribution I, Wastewater Collection I)
  • Minimum grade 12 high school education.
  • At least one year experience in the operation and maintenance of a water/wastewater facility.
  • Must have a minimum (1) one year municipal water distribution experience with a proven understanding of the operation and maintenance of a water system “Source to Tap”.
  • Any combination of training, education and experience that demonstrates an ability to perform the duties of the position. The typical qualifying entrance background is one year of experience in water treatment, water distribution and wastewater collection).
