About US:

The British High Commission is the diplomatic liaison office that aims to develop and maintain close bilateral relations with Uganda, in accordance with British government policies. The British High Commission is responsible for the political relationship between the UK and Uganda, and we provide advice and guidance on political and governance issues. BHC provides assistance and documentary services to British nationals in Uganda.

 

Job Summary:  The Political Officer – British High Commission will provide analysis and advice on Ugandan politics and current affairs, as well as supporting incoming and outward visits to Uganda. You will need to build and maintain strong networks with government, parliament, academia, the media and civil society.  The ideal candidate is likely to have worked in a political field – perhaps in government, parliament, civil society or a diplomatic mission with strong contacts in these areas, and have significant analysis and reporting experience.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The job holder will be expected to be an expert when it comes to the politics of Uganda and current affairs. They will provide regular written and verbal analysis and advice across the High Commission and to FCDO HQ. The jobholder will cultivate a wide range of contacts, whilst tapping into their existing networks, in order to provide high quality reporting and analysis.
  • The jobholder will also provide both policy and additional logistical support to incoming and outward visits to Uganda, ensuring that such visits successfully further the UK-Uganda relationship.
  • The job holder will line manage an AO Political and Visit Support Officer, supporting them to deliver across their range of functions.
  • The jobholder will be part of an energetic and engaged team, and will need to be flexible and responsive to changing demands. They will also play a wider corporate role in the High Commission.




Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The applicant for the British High Commission (BHC) Political Officer job must have three years of relevant work experience;
  • Keen knowledge and understanding of current affairs and Ugandan political history, including but not limited to the role of Parliament and Uganda’s electoral system.
  • Excellent communication skills – written, oral, one-to-one, group, formal presentations – ability to vary style, pace and presentation to suit the audience.
  • Advanced people skills –networking, management, organising.
  • Strong problem solving skills, including close attention to detail and ability to prioritise in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability and willingness to undergo security vetting process.

 

Desirable

  • A university degree in political studies, international relations, social sciences or a related field;
  • Experience of project management, including budget management;
  • Experience of working in issues related to Uganda’s political, economic and social environments, including with key institutions and persons in Government, Parliament, Academia, Media and civil society;
  • Experience in report writing, note taking and event planning.
