Stipend: GGGI interns receive a monthly stipend of USD$500 per month. All costs related to travel, insurance, accommodation, and living expenses must be borne by either the interns or their sponsoring institutions.

Job Summary:  We are looking for a talented individual to work with us in the GGGI Kampala, Uganda Office to support the implementation of the Faecal Sludge Management (FSM) element of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) funded Project titled “Strengthening Solid Waste and Faecal Sludge Management Capacity of the GKMA” with support and guidance from the Project Manager. Overall, the long-term impact objective of GGGI Uganda and the program is that “Uganda achieves strong, inclusive and sustainable economic growth”. It anticipated that the Intern will be able to gain insight on international organization workspace experience, hands on training in project planning and implementation, stakeholder engagement, experience in policy reformation processes and site selection for FS treatment plants.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with the FSM team on the implementation of the FSM element of the Project especially the development of a draft strategy for FSM. Particular attention to legal and institutional framework review and gap analysis and, data collection from selected towns, cities and/or municipalities.
  • Contribute to the implementation of the other project elements where applicable.
  • Coordination of stakeholder engagement meetings, capture minutes for different meetings and documentation. Key stakeholders include, but not limited to: Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE), Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), the Ministry of Local Government (MoLG), National Planning Authority (NPA) and the District and Municipal Governments.
  • Capture lessons learned to support refinement/improvement of the execution modality.
  • Collect relevant data and documents from different agencies and compile for project team.
  • Support communication related activities.
  • Provide other support where requested.

 

Eligibility

Applicants to the GGGI internship program must at the time of application meet the following requirements:

  • Be of a Ugandan national.
  • Be enrolled in a Master’s or PhD program prior to internship assignment, or a recent graduate within the last 12 months.
  • Be engaged or recently engaged in academic study in a field directly related to the Institute’s work
  • Possess an excellent command of English.

 




Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Undertaking Master’s degree or completed a Master’s program in Environmental Health or Environmental related science, Sanitation Engineering, and Civil/water engineering, or a recent graduate within the last 12 months.
  • Substantial training or 2 years’ experience in water and sanitation fields
  • Possess excellent interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrate good communication skills
  • Excellent English oral and written communication skills; including public speaking.

 

Important information:

  • Duration: The internship program is for at least three months and up to six months. Once selected, interns must begin your internship either prior to or within 12 months of graduation.
  • Travel: Intern will be responsible for his/her own transport to office duty stations (within Kampala) other than field visits (outside Kampala). Field visits outside Kampala will be catered for by GGGI.
  • Medical Insurance: Interns must present proof of valid medical insurance to GGGI upon returning the signed internship contract.
  • Confidentiality: Interns must keep confidential all unpublished information obtained during the course of the internship and may not publish any documents based on such information.
  • Academic Credit: Interns may get academic credit from their institution of higher education for the internship. Interns need to check with their university to confirm their academic credit policy for internships.
  • Working Hours: interns are expected to work during normal working hours. Leave should be pre-approved by the Intern Manager, and the latter should inform the Office of HR accordingly.
  • Learning Outcomes: before completion of the internship, Intern Managers are expected to review the learning outcomes with the intern.
  • Certificate: provided upon successful completion of the internship, upon request.
