In 2021, Finn Church Aid (FCA) with funding from Women’s Bank (WB) established a project ‘Promoting Women’s Entrepreneurship in the Poultry Value Chain in Mityana, Uganda’.  The project aims to enhance economic self-reliance of 600 smallholder women maize farmers by engaging them in the maize/poultry value chain. The project will support 600 farmers with maize farming, initiate structures for maize producer organizations, savings and credit system (VSLA), and upgrade the capacities of the 600 women farmers in both production and business management

 

Job Summary:  The Project Assistant- Agriculture will ensure that the maize production field among targeted beneficiaries and demonstration/study sites, poultry, and other maize/poultry value chain IGAs are maintained to standards by closely working with lead farmers and sub county extension staff.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in establishment of demonstration and study plots with lead farmers and other farmers with interest
  • Maintains records on maize production, farms and all agro based activities related the poultry/maize value chain.
  • Supports farmers in construction and maintenance of structures related to the project activities such as bulking centres, poultry houses, pig sties etc
  • Supports targeted small holder women in the application of fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides during the maize phenology.
  • Organize and conduct farm beneficiary training during farm field days and also provide on spot training to individual farmers.
  • Shall be responsible for coordinating, guiding and supporting lead farmers to ensure that they perform their roles
  • Supervise all farmers to ensure quality production of maize and other products as per standards set by the buyers
  • Organize and conduct lead farmers meetings to discuss the production, buying and selling of maize.
  • Compile periodic work plans and reports and share the same with line supervisor as per set standards.
  • Conduct any other activities as directed by the supervisor, project manager or their designates




Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The ideal candidate for the Finn Church Aid (FCA) Project Assistant- Agriculture job placement should hold a post-secondary qualification in Agronomy, Agribusiness, or related field.
  • At least three years’ experience training smallholder farmers in agribusiness.
  • Familiarity with market-linkages, and on farm agricultural constraints.
  • Fluent in English and proficiency in Luganda strongly preferred
  • Able to ride a motor cycle and must possess a valid rider’s license;
  • Willing to reside in the selected project area and refugee settlement and possession of a valid motorcycle license.
  • High integrity, self-driven and able to set own work schedule with rigorous deadlines.
  • Ability to initiate and complete assignments and to work under demanding circumstances with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organization, supervisory, problem-solving, interpersonal, communication as well as team building and negotiation skills.
