About US:

The Infectious Diseases Research Collaboration (IDRC) is a non-profit research organization. IDRC conducts research in infectious diseases including Malaria, HIV and Tuberculosis. Our studies have led to over 300 publications and have impacted on the management of infectious diseases in Uganda. IDRC currently manages over 41 Grants with an annual budget of $11 million. IDRC was established in May 2008 by Ugandan health scientists from Makerere University College of Health Sciences, University of California, San Francisco and the Uganda Ministry of Health.

 

Job Summary:  The Infectious Diseases Research Collaboration (IDRC) seeks to hire a suitable candidate for the position of Laboratory technologist for the Implementing Malaria Molecular Surveillance (IMMRSE) study. The successful candidate will be based at Genomics lab at Ministry of Health, Central Public Health Laboratories (CPHL), Butabika.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Receive and track Dry Blood Spots (DBS) and other study samples received at the study
  • lab using an Excel sheet or any other sample tracking system
  • Check sample quality, store samples and prepare them for future processing
  • Prepare and organize shipment of samples both locally and internationally
  • Perform analyses on study samples as per study SOP and timely recording of results
  • Support supervision of field laboratory staff when necessary
  • Prepare timely purchase requests for study reagents and equipment
  • Regular inventory of laboratory supplies and equipment
  • Ensure laboratory activities are executed as per schedule/ timelines
  • Ensure lab equipment is serviced on time, well maintained, and daily record of fridge temperatures
  • Perform laboratory quality assurance for all laboratory procedure
  • Communicate with field sites to ensure smooth flow of study activities and delivery of samples
  • Organize conference calls with local and international study teams.

  • Study equipment and reagents well maintained
  • Timely processing of samples and release of results




Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The applicant must hold a Degree in medical laboratory technology.
  • Masters in immunology, microbiology, lab technology or related field is an added advantage
  • Updated IATA and GCP certificates
  • Proficient user of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power point)
  • Experience working in a research laboratory, handling sensitive samples and equipment is required
  • Willingness to work long hours and pay attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of genomics analysis techniques will be an added advantage.
