Job Summary:  The head teacher will be responsible for the internal organization, management and control of ACCESS Early Childhood development program in accordance with the ministry of education and sports standards and other applicable policies and legislations. The head teacher, working with the school management committee, will develop a strategic view for ACCESS Early Childhood Development Program (AECDP) which is appropriate to the community educational needs.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Teaching and learning

  • To ensure that children are always engaged in safe, healthy, carefully planned, high quality educational activities in an environment that is stimulating, child centered and designed to promote enjoyment and excitement in learning
  • To treat each child as a developing individual and nurture their strength
  • To ensure that the assessment and monitoring requirements of the early childhood development program (ECDP) are carried out
  • To ensure that assessment is used to inform developmentally appropriate planning and practice for individuals and groups of children.
  • To ensure that children and families are supported to access other services as needed and to work with other professionals to meet identified needs
  • To be responsible for the evaluation of the overall quality of teaching and learning in the school and for monitoring practices across the school
  • To ensure that the curriculum is regularly reviewed, evaluated and updated taking account of local and international and international initiatives, policies and other regulations
  • To enable parents and caretakers to share, understand and enjoy their child’s learning
  • Must also be ready to participate in teaching the children.

Leadership and management

  • To lead and work with a team of teachers, early childhood development practitioners and support staff across the whole organization, following the principles and requirements of Early Childhood Development Program (ECDP)
  • To support all the staff in the performance of their work by providing clear expectations, recording and guidance, a clear appraisal process, regular advice on continual professional development, appropriate training among others
  • To work with senior leadership of the organization to ensure that statutory regulations are met and that the children are offered a deep and broad range of learning experiences in all areas of development within the ECDP
  • To prioritize and solve day to day crisis in a calm and reassuring manner.
  • In consultation with the school management committee and colleagues, to ensure that the school development plan is meaningful, motivating, manageable and regularly reviewed
  • To ensure that all required policies are implemented and are updated in a timely manner and in accordance with the latest statutory requirements and guidelines
  • Facilitate the work of the school management committee by providing all necessary information, advice and support to enable the management committee fulfill its role and to encourage them to be involved in the school activities
  • Provide facility management oversight of all the properties that are part of the school

Community involvement

  • Identify the needs of the local community, with particular emphasis on the needs of the most vulnerable groups
  • Develop and promote community involvement in the school and ensure that parents and caretakers are able to contribute to the development of services
  • Promote equal opportunities and ensure cohesion





Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • At least a diploma in Early Childhood development program or any nursery teaching from a reputable institution of learning
  • Three years of previous experience as a preschool teacher preferably at level of a head teacher
  • Excellent communication and instructional skills
  • Excellent understanding of the principles of early childhood development program and preschool educational methods
  • Familiarity with safety and sanitation guidelines for classrooms
  • Ability to act as a mediator between children
  • Cool tempered, friendly and reliable
  • Balance between a creative mind and a practical acumen
  • Knowledge of the relevant laws and regulations governing early childhood development programs in Uganda
  • Ability to manage a team of both teaching and non-teaching staff
