Vijana Corps (Vijana) is a Ugandan based, youth led, youth focused organization working to realize an enlightened, empowered and productive youth through digital and media literacy, livelihood and entrepreneurship development and participatory leadership approaches. Founded in 2013, Vijana envisions a Uganda where the youth are empowered and actively participate in processes that ensure social justice and equitable development. Vijana works through a network-based establishment of organized youth groups across the country. These platforms are tailor made to enable the marginalized, poor, and disenfranchised youth to be seen and heard.

 

Job Summary:  The Program Assistant will be based in our Mukono Hub and will support the programs team in the development and implementation of programs. S/he will ensure smooth program implementation in line with VC’s strategy and policies.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Program Support

  • You will work with the Program Officer and the Programs team to plan projects and develop funding proposals.
  • You are responsible for the implementation of projects in the communities covered by the Central regional Hub.
  • You will coordinate with the programs team on updates, inputs, and opportunities to scale up initiatives within the region.
  • You will network with alliances, movements, and coalitions to support youth-led networks/organizations, establish strong partnerships with local and national level stakeholders.
  • Work collaboratively with management to integrate youth engagement across all Programs.
  • Develop and encourage innovative ideas and solutions among the team and integrate such innovations in training programs for the youth.
  • Provide regular input on project/program design and implementation in line with budget allocations.
  • Support research initiatives of other strategic priorities with the view to integrating youth-specific topics.
  • Provide support in the drafting, review and editing of program annual work plans, budgets and M&E plans, and ensure that activities are implemented on time and within the allocated budget.
  • Assist in the project coordination process by tracking inceptions, implementation and completion process, and e-filing of final documents in virtual office folios.

Administrative support.

  • Prepare regular updates and support the management team in undertaking planning exercises for the national program.
  • Provide administrative support to the programme team in organizing events, meetings and workshops, etc.
  • Make travel and logistical arrangements for the Secretariat team during support supervision trips.
  • Maintain an up-to-date filing of documents and training resources in virtual office folios, and where necessary, physical filing.
  • Prepare presentations and talks, either as part of a whole, or a highlight of the Eastern spoke.
  • Maintain confidential records.
  • Act as the contact person for the Central Hub in the absence of the Hub Administrator.
  • Assist in the orientation of new program Young Professionals.
  • Perform all other related duties assigned from time to time.

Supports knowledge building and knowledge sharing

  • Participate in the training for the operations/ program staff.
  • Contribute to knowledge networks and communities of practice.
  • Provide training to program interns and young professional associates attached to the programs department.
  • Prepare, develop, and disseminate content for knowledge products, training modules.




Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The ideal applicant must hold a Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, development studies and related fields.
  • Training in digital skills/Information Technology is an added advantage.
  • At least 2-3 years of experience working with youth or an organization serving young people preferably in the Programs department.
  • Previous experience in project management, monitoring and evaluation, and/or knowledge management is an added advantage.
  • Basic understanding of Human Rights-Based Approach to Development.
  • Sound knowledge of development concepts, methodologies and techniques including demonstrated understanding of youth issues in the development and demonstrable commitment to promoting youth involvement within the organization and in programme work.
  • Sound knowledge in the political, social, economic, and historic environment in which youth programmes are operating at both national and community levels.
  • An understanding of development partnerships, networking, fundraising.
