About DINU Project:

The Development Initiative for Northern Uganda, a Government of Uganda program supported by the European Union, was awarded to the CARE Denmark led consortium to implement the Livelihoods and Agriculture component in Karamoja, Teso and Acholi sub-regions. The implementation of DINU program activities got affected by the occurrence of COVID-19 pandemic and desert locust that affected several season bound activities. To support the implementation of DINU activities, CARE International in Uganda seeks to recruit a Livelihoods Volunteer.

 

Job Summary:  Under the direct supervision of the Livelihoods Coordinator in Kotido, the Livelihoods Volunteer will implement activities concerning the objectives of production and household income. S/He will conduct the hands-on implementation of Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA), Access to input markets, financial inclusion, linkages of smallholder farmers to market operators, and support farmers undertaking other value chain opportunities, including contract farming activities. S/He will be required to collaborate with the Volunteer on Maternal and Child Nutrition, Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH) and Family Planning. S/He will contribute to increased utilization of quality integrated Livelihoods services in the target districts of Karamoja, Katakwi and Kitgum districts.

 

Purpose of the Volunteer: To support the implementation of project components on adopting and producing nutritious and diverse foods and market access and linkages. We will achieve this purpose with close collaboration with the Livelihoods Coordinator and Gender and SRH Coordinator, and SRHG Volunteer, with overall guidance from the Livelihood Specialist in implementing Livelihoods and Agriculture activities of Development Initiative for Northern Uganda (DINU).

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • To conduct mobilization, validation, and verification of profiled project participants, including supporting the project participants’ database entry and management.
  • Support implementation of interventions to produce diversified foods, input and output markets, financial inclusion, and market access.
  • Contribute to developing detailed monthly and quarterly implementation plans while ensuring synergy building within the project components.
  • Implement assigned Livelihoods activities in the plan while ensuring timeliness and quality within available resources and immediately reporting any challenges or deviations from plans.
  • Implement agricultural production, financial inclusion, market access, nutrition; gender equality; marketing; and business management and gender dialogues to engage men.
  • Support the partner’s TOTs preparations.
  • Contribute to the preparation of procurement of inputs and support and Support Lead Framer demonstration engagements and Farmer Learning Platforms.
  • Work with Livelihoods Coordinator to ensure logistics are organized to coordinate participants in different scheduled events.

 

Key Outputs

  • The expectation is that at the end of this service:
  • Production of diversified foods, input and output markets, financial inclusion, and market access implemented.
  • Climate Smart Agriculture and Farmer Field Business school FFBS model, agricultural production, financial inclusion, market access, nutrition, gender equality, marketing, and business management implemented.
  • Lead Farmer demonstration engagements and Farmer Learning Platforms supported.
  • Access to informal and formal finance supported.
  • Livelihoods activities in the plan are timely implemented in a quality manner.

 




Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The applicant must hold a Diploma / Degree in Agriculture, Agribusiness, and Entrepreneurship.
  • At least two years and above in a medium-sized organization experience, preferably INGO in a similar role.
  • Strong agricultural, agribusiness and entrepreneurship acumen, including strong problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and self-initiative
  • Demonstrated ability to coach smallholders in the use of best practices.
  • Excellent written, verbal communication, interpersonal skills; high-quality document and report preparation; excellent presentation skills.
  • Thorough understanding of Karamoja livelihoods opportunities.
  • Proven ability to successfully work as a team member and build and maintain a positive work environment.
  • Strong understanding of Livelihoods and Agribusiness principles.

Payment: CARE Uganda will provide a stipend of Ugs. 500,000 (Five Hundred Thousand) UGX per month to cover transport to the office and other minimum costs of living expenses.
