About Project:

HI Uganda Mission with funding from Directorate-General for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid (DGD), is going to implement the BAHIA project (Agile response by the Belgian Alliance for Humanitarian International Action to control the spread of COVID-19 and mitigate its multi-dimensional effects on humanitarian crisis) in West-Nile settlements of Imvepi and omugo extension. BAHIA is a consortia project comprising of 7 organisations of OXFAM which is the lead, PLAN, Belgian Red Cross/Flanders RC, MDM, Caritas, HI BAHIA will contribute to the preparedness and response to the primary and secondary impacts of COVID-19 by promoting public health and supporting the protection of vulnerable populations from contamination to COVID-19 as well as increased protection risks while restoring their dignity and capacity to meet their basic needs

 

NB: The project is planned to be implemented up to December 2021.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Project Manager and in direct coordination with the Project Teams, the Sign Language Interpreter will:

Provide Sign Language interpretation during training/Meetings/workshops

·         The Sign Language interpreter will be responsible for helping individuals with hearing impairment understand what is being said in a variety of settings including one on one communication, workshops, awareness sessions, trainings, seminars, conferences, events, and other organizational settings.

·         The interpreter will be required to research technical and/or complex information to accurately interpret the subject matter from spoken language to sign language and vice versa while mediating the deaf culture.

Provide sign language trainings for staffs and beneficiaries

·         It is expected that the sign language interpreter will provide (basic) sign language trainings for HI staff, beneficiaries in Imvepi and Rhino camp including Omugo settlements and other relevant groups.

Demonstration of an ethics, safe, secure and professional practices

·         To show professional ethics, respect and promote Humanity & Inclusion mandate and humanitarian principles at all times

·         To respect the Humanity & Inclusion protection of children policy, the protection of beneficiaries from sexual exploitation and abuse policy, the anti-fraud bribery and corruption policy and report to your line manager any non-respect of HI’s policies amongst the teams or partners.

·         To report any incident or act that causes any harm to beneficiary or to others

·         To contribute to the definition and/or update of security framework at field level

·         To observe at all times strict commitment to Humanity & Inclusion Security & Safety regulations as per procedures in place at mission level

·         To support information internal dissemination to relevant focal persons at mission level aiming at reinforcing security and safety of Handicap International staff and assets

·         To participate in security meetings upon the line manager request and report relevant information to the appropriate persons.

Respect of HI identity, rules and policies

·         In coordination with the Human resources manager and the Operations Manager

·         Know, understand, apply and respect HI code of conduct and ethics, HI mandate and values, HI rules and operating procedure, HI policies (child protection policy, policy and mechanism for the prevention of and fight against bribery, the protection of beneficiaries from sexual exploitation and abuse policy) and make sure they are known, understood, applied and respected by its team

·         Know, understand, apply and respect HI security rules and make sure they are known, understood and applied by her/his team Regular refresher trainings are organized

 


Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

·         The ideal candidate for the Humanity & Inclusion Sign Language Interpreter job should hold a diploma or certificate in Ugandan Sign Language interpretation

·         Other relevant Bachelor Degrees if proven experience in Education/Humanities and the field of disability inclusion

·         At least three years of professional experience in Education/ Development / Humanitarian Sector at officer level

·         Experience in consortia lead projects

·         Experience in the fields of inclusion / accessibility of services / services to persons with disabilities

·         Experience in training of adults

·         Experience working in refugee context.

·         Experience working in CVA projects would be an added value

·         Experience working inclusion / DPO sector would be an added advantage

·         Knowledge of local languages is an advantage

·         Adherence to standards of confidential communication.

·         Conducting him/ her in a manner appropriate to the specific interpreting situation.

·         Demonstrated respect for the deaf consumers, colleagues and the wider society

·         Observing ethical business practices.

·         Always observe punctuality;

·         Be properly dressed as the situations may dictate.

·         Strong command of English,

·         Excellent receptive and voicing skill. Ability to understand what a person with hearing impairment has said (expressed in sign language) and voice it accurately.

·         Excellent expressive skill – proper use of body language, facial expression, tone of the message etc.

·         Ability to communicate effectively using all relevant means whilst tailoring communication to the person being addressed.

·         Ability to maintain the highest levels of confidentiality and sensitivity of people from diverse cultural backgrounds

·         Ability to translate for children affected by safeguarding incidents.

·         Demonstrated evidence of ongoing professional development

·         Ability to cope with flexible hours of working and a willingness to travel, sometimes on short notice

·         Awareness of the needs of the deaf and Deaf Culture is crucial

·         Ability to work under high pressure.

·         Ability and willingness to regularly travel to field sites.

·         Strong interpersonal and intercultural skills

·         Good communication and networking skills

·         Strong interest in the fields related to HI mandate

·         Strong result oriented with ability to challenge existing mind sets.

 

Condition:

Starting Date: As soon as possible

Length of contract: 9 months
