About US:

The Media Council of
Uganda was established under Section 8 of the Press and Journalist Act, Cap 105
to:

·       
Regulate
the conduct and promote good ethical standards and discipline of journalists;

·       
Arbitrate
disputes between

·       
The
public and the media; and

·       
The
State and the media;

·       
Exercise
disciplinary control over journalists, editors and publishers;

·       
Promote,
generally, the flow of information;

·       
Censor
films, videotapes, plays and other related apparatuses tor public consumption;
and

·       
Exercise
any function that may be authorised or required by any law.

 

Job Summary:  The Legal Officer/ Registrar will provide
support for timely resolution of media disputes and processes in accordance
with laid down principles and procedures of dispute resolution.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:  

·       
Receive
and record all disciplinary cases.

·       
Ensure
the fixing of dates and hearing of disciplinary cases.

·       
Forward
disciplinary cases to the Disciplinary Committee for hearing.

·       
Transmit
documents and communications between the Disciplinary Committee and the parties
involved in disciplinary cases.

·       
Coordinate
logistics for hearings and meetings.

·       
Maintain
a list of cases entered and numbered in the order in which the documents
instituting proceedings or requesting arbitration are received in the Registry.

·       
Research
discrete questions relating to witness’ testimony on record, draft memoranda
summarizing submissions and prepare drafts of the Committee’s orders, decisions
and awards.

·       
Attend
Disciplinary Committee proceedings it called upon.

·       
Follow
up on the enforcement of orders of the Committee.

·       
Any
other duty that may be assigned from time to time.

 


Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

·       
The applicant
must hold an Honours degree in law from a recognized institution;

·       
A
Diploma in Legal Practice from Law Development Centre;

·       
A
Masters Degree or higher qualification in the relevant field is an added
advantage; and

·       
Must be
enrolled as an advocate of the High Court of Uganda with a valid practicing
certificate

·       
At least
two years’ post-enrolment relevant working experience in a reputable
organization. Media experience is desirable but not a prerequisite.
