Seed for Seeds (S4S)
Uganda Ltd is a legally registered company limited by guarantee. S4S (U) Ltd
operates as a not-for-profit enterprise to produce and market basic seed on a
cost recovery basis since this seed class is marginally profitable. The goal of
S4S (U) Ltd  is to increase food security
of farmers through availing sufficient quantities of quality basic seed to
guarantee availability of certified and Duality Declared Seed (QDS) of major
food crops.

 

Job Summary:  The Seed Production Assistant will be
responsible for the production and processing of basic seed, liaising with crop
breeding programs for acquisition and maintenance of pre-basic seed plots,
contracting and supervision of basic seed out growers and overseeing internal
and external quality control assurance. S/he will also oversee the effective
operation and maintenance of farm machinery, equipment and the seed processing
plant. .

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:  

·       
Seed
production planning, booking and procurement of certification labels, pre-basic
and basic seed, and other inputs such as fertilizer, pesticides, seed dressing
chemicals, etc.

·       
Identification
and registration of contract seed growers and liaising with the sales team to
ensure that the projected demand for company products is met.

·       
Compiling
seasonal planting returns and liaising with the National Seed Certification
Service {NSCS) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries
(MAAIF} to provide quality assurance services for the seed produced by the
company.

·       
Develop
and operationalize an internal quality management system (OMS) for the company.

·       
Supervision
oi contract seed growers to ensure the seed produced meets established quality
standards and recommended agronomic practices for better yields.

·       
Oversee
all post-harvest operations to ensure basic seed standards right from the time
it is delivered to the warehouse. This will include drying, cleaning, grading,
sorting, treatment, packaging and labeling.

·       
Plan a
maintenance regime for the seed processing equipment to ensure sound running
during and at the close of every season.

·       
Maintain
seed storage standards including pest control and hygiene, both within and outside
the stores surroundings

 

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

·       
The
applicant must hold a BSc. Agriculture, Agronomy or Crop Science

·       
A
minimum of two years of demonstrated experience in seed or general crop
production with a reputable organisation or seed company..

·       
Demonstrated
experience in seed production

·       
Good
knowledge of computer applications particularly MS Excel, Word and PowerPoint.

·       
Ability
to work for long hours and manage pressure especially during the peak season.

·       
Self-
motivated with the ability to work under minimum supervision.

·       
Good
communication and leadership skills including demonstrated ability of team work

·       
Age: 25 to 45 years
