Job Summary:  Overall responsibilities of the WASH
Sustainability Officer (WSO) is to contribute to improved quality of life for
vulnerable children and families by working alongside LI stakeholders at
various levels to promote sustainable program implementation. The WSO
contributes to the development and oversees the implementation of LI
sustainability strategy and initiatives at the programme level. S/he will be
responsible for implementation of sustainability activities, including support
of Lifewater’s Water Works operations and maintenance strategy for water and
sanitation facilities and sustainable behavior change transformation in homes
and communities through the social group mobilisation and support strategy.
S/he provides administrative and planning oversight for the Water Works
sustainability program, and works closely with local social groups and
stakeholders to ensure that WASH improvements are being sustained for the long
term. The WSO manages social group activities, designed to empower local
self-help groups to advocate and prioritise WASH in their communities and
guides them to implement and follow up communities to sustain appropriate
hygiene and sanitation behaviours. S/he will also take part in other trainings,
such as WASH Facilitators and water committee members. He/she will also take
part in monitoring as well as overseeing sustainability program component.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:  

Sustainability and Water Works

·       
Supports planning and budgeting of water and
sanitation sustainability activities as part of the overall programme plans

·       
Takes lead in the roll out of the Water Works
plans and activities in support of improved O&M of water sources

·       
Supports the WASH Programme Engineer and the
Area Program Manager in developing plans for water points monitoring and
maintenance including annual water quality testing schedules

·       
Working alongside the SHOs and hardware team to
provide information and guidance to community structures about sustainable
water works principles and practices

Social group mobilization and support

·       
Takes lead in the identification, assessment,
training and guiding social groups to support WASH sustainability activities to
promote effective and sustainable implementation of the VHV at program level

·       
Creates a schedule for monitoring visits,
refresher trainings, and regular meetings with social groups and ensure that
they are implementing WASH activities effectively.

·       
Lead in local social group engagement, trainings,
and regular meetings

·       
Monitors and reports on Social groups’
activities

Collaboration, monitoring, and reporting

 

·       
Engaging and strengthening partnerships with
government and other key stakeholders at local levels through attending
meetings, updating them on progress to ensure buy in and create a positive
support of LI program work

·       
Takes part and supports the SHC and SHOs in
trainings of water committees, WASH Facilitators and church leaders to ensure
that community structures are equipped to sustain WASH improvements long after
the Lifewater program

·       
Supports documentation of lessons, research and
innovation activities; shares information in support of LI sustainable
programme implementation

·       
Participate in monitoring and evaluation
processes on the effectiveness of LI sustainability initiatives

·       
Provide support to others on the team in the
planning, implementation and monitoring of other software activities as
requested, including with WASH Facilitators, water committees, schools, and
health care facilities to evaluate sustainability of WASH improvements

·       
Prepares and shares regular status reports on LI
sustainability activities

 

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

·       
The applicant for the Lifewater International
(LI) WASH Sustainability Officer job must hold a University degree in
Environmental Health, Environment Management, Public Health, Social Sciences,
SWASA, Development Studies, Community Health, Community Psychology, Education
or other related field

·       
Previous experience in the design and delivery
of capacity building trainings in rural communities

·       
Experience in programme planning &
management of sustainable programme particularly in WASH service provision

·       
Minimum of three years Development working
experience preferably in an NGO setting in the Health/water and Sanitation
sector

·       
Strong ICT skills especially Microsoft Office
applications (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Excellent command of the English language, both
written and spoken

·       
Good communication and negotiation skills

·       
Must be a team player and able to work with and
amongst the LI team and key stakeholders in the target districts towards
realizing and attaining key program milestones

Ability to ride a motorcycle and holder of a
clean and valid riding permit

·       
Ability to communicate (speak, read & write)
in Lulamogi, Lusoga, Luganda
