Founded in 2012, 32°
East is a centre for the creation and exploration of contemporary Ugandan art.
Based in the capital, Kampala, we provide the artistic community with studio
space, workshops, residencies and artist-led outreach projects. Through
supporting education, innovation and professionalism we aim to nurture, develop
and raise the profile of Ugandan visual art to a national and international
level. 32° East | Ugandan Arts Trust is a registered company limited by
guarantee in Uganda and in the UK. 32° East is a member of Arts Collaboratory
and the Triangle Network, and a Prince Claus Network Partner.

About KLA ART:

Since its’ first
edition in 2012, KLA ART has reached over 10,000 audiences based in Kampala and
abroad, by providing a platform to promote and profile the newest ideas from
contemporary Ugandan artists. KLA ART was founded by: 32° East, AKA Gallery,
Afriart Gallery, Alliance Frangaise, The Goethe—Zentrum UGCS, Nommo Gallery,
Makerere University and Uganda Museum. The festival aims to provide a dynamic
platform for freedom of speech for artists and audiences, on-going professional
development for artists, art managers and curators to build a thriving visual
art scene in Kampala and the promotion, celebration and understanding of
Ugandan visual culture, locally and internationally. A key component of this
year’s festival is KLA ART Labs, an immersive experiential program designed to
provide creative professionals with the tools and opportunities for in-depth
research and critical thinking through public practice. The program is an
initiative of 32° East, with support from the Prince Claus Fund for Culture and
Development, Newcastle University and Arts Collaboratory.

Job Title: KLA ART Festival Coordinator

Supporting: All Staff and KLA ART Artists

Location: 32° East, Kampala, Uganda

Contract: 8 months

Job Summary:  The KLA ART festival coordinator will work closely with the 32° East
team to deliver the KLA ART festival. They are responsible for the smooth
running of the programme as the lead contact for all festival stakeholders.
They will also be the liaison between all international festival participants
and the 32 team, and handle all project logistics. The coordinator will also
have the opportunity to work with the team to incorporate the experiences of
KLA ART Labs, the alternative arts education programme that leads up to the
festival. The Coordinator will often manage public facing events and should be
able to represent 32° East, and promote the organisation’s visibility. This job
description is a guide to the nature of the work required of 32° East KLA ART
festival coordinator. It is not wholly comprehensive or restrictive and does
not form part of the contract of employment.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:  

·       
Oversee
the operational and logistical success of the festival while maintaining clear
organisational updates with 32° East’s team;

·       
Oversee
the recruitment, roles and schedules for KLA ART volunteers;

·       
Handle all
logistics for international guests, including transport and accommodation;

·       
Oversee
the execution of each event/ or public presentation;

·       
Assist
with programme reports for funders and other stakeholders;

Logistics

·       
Manage
location scouting and permissions, in close relationship with the Kampala
Capital City Authority (KCCA)

·       
Plan and
organise all off site excursions

·       
Oversee
festival budget, alongside 32° East bookkeeper, handling purchasing of materials
and supplies as needed

Communications and Audience Development

·       
Work
alongside the rest of the 32° East team on logo, branding and website for KLA
ART 20;

·       
Provide
Media Manager with relevant text and communication materials for social media
and website updates

·       
Produce
photographs and videos where appropriate

·       
Write a
clear and dynamic press release of KLA ART 20 for local and international press
distribution;

·       
Plan and
implement a marketing strategy in line with KLA ART 20’s objectives leading up to
and during the festival;

·       
Achieve
clear and transparent communication with the artists involved in KLA ART

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

·       
The applicant must hold a Bachelor
of Arts or related field

·       
At least 3
years work experience in project management role

·       
Passionate
about alternative education, arts and culture

·       
Experience
with marketing and PR

·       
Excellent
interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal

·       
Extremely
organised, adept at meeting deadlines and keeping time

·       
Must be
eligible to work in Uganda

Desirable

·       
Experience
of working in a small-scale arts organization;

·       
Experience
of working directly with artists, supporting them in the development of their

·       
research
or the creation of new work;

·       
Demonstrable
knowledge of the Ugandan, East African and International art scene.

Terms
and conditions

32° East offers a
competitive compensation package, an 18 month contract with potential for
performance-based contract renewal, a dynamic work environment, and
opportunities for professional growth.

8 month
fixed term contract, starting mid February 2020

·       
Hours of
work: 09:00am – 5pm with one-hour lunch break

  • The hours worked may require evenings and weekends
  • The period of notice is one month in writing
  • Probation period: 3 months
