United Nations Industrial
Development Organization (UNIDO) is the specialized agency of the United
Nations that promotes industrial development for poverty reduction, inclusive
globalization and environmental sustainability. Its mission is to promote and
accelerate inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID) in
developing countries and economies in transition. The relevance of ISID as an
integrated approach to all three pillars of sustainable development is
recognized by the recently adopted 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and
the related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which will frame United
Nations and country efforts towards sustainable development in the next fifteen
years. UNIDOs mandate in SDG-9, calls for the need to “Build resilient
infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster
innovation”. UNIDO delivers its services through the following four
complementary and mutually supportive core functions: (a) technical cooperation
activities; (b) analytical and policy advisory services; (c ) standard- setting
and compliance and (d) convening and partnership role. Such core functions are
carried out in Departments/Offices in its Headquarters, Regional Offices and
Hubs and Country Offices.

Job Summary:  The Project Assistant for the EELA project
will support the day to day work of EELA project tasks, particularly in the EAC
region. He/she is reporting to the Executive Director of EACREEE and to the
UNIDO – EELA Project Manager. He/she will particularly coordinate with the team
based at SACREEE and execute his/her duties in close collaboration with all
project counterparts.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:  Under the supervision of the EACREEE Executive Director, the Project
Assistant will:

  • Provide general support to the
    day-to-day project activities encompassing monitoring and evaluation of
    project activities as per work plan and time schedule; to ensure its
    effective execution;
  • Maintain proper administrative tracking
    systems to facilitate the management of contracts;
  • Provide support to travel arrangements;
  • Support the organisation of project
    meetings and regional workshops;
  • Ensure the delivery of support services
    by guiding, monitoring and overseeing performances in the areas of general
    administrative services;
  • Support in Project Steering Committee
    (PSC) secretarial duties;
  • Ensure that all project meetings are
    effectively organised and recorded;
  • Maintain effective records and administration;
  • Support the project communication
    activities;
  • Communication and correspondence.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The applicant for the United Nations
    Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Project Assistant should have
    completed secondary education. Formal secretarial/clerical training or
    equivalent desirable. Credit towards total working experience may be
    considered on a year by-year- basis, up to maximum of four years, for a
    first university degree or equivalent diploma, in a field relevant to the
    post.
  • Knowledge of French, Portuguese and
    local languages and dialects are an asset.
  • At least six years of working experience
    in the related fields of the post, thorough understanding of office
    procedures and practices, preferably within the UN system or in a
    multicultural environment, including experience in project administration,
    accounting and finance, providing support to managerial/professional staff
    and using secretarial/administrative skills to assist in the execution of
    project development and implementation of work;
  • Ability to handle protocol with
    development partners;
  • Ability to work under pressure and in an
    international working environment. Proficient use of Microsoft Office
    (Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint), internet. Experience with SAP or
    similar ERP software an asset
  • Languages: Fluency in written and spoken English
    is required.
